Boston University’s OpenBU is the one of the University’s primary tools for extending access to the University’s intellectual output. The Faculty Council (2008) and the University Council (2009) voted to approve an open access initiative that would develop means to make scholarly work of the faculty and staff available online to anyone, for free, as long as the authors are credited and the scholarship is not used for profit. Recent studies comparing open access and non-open access articles in the same journal/year, indicates that open access articles have consistently more citations, the advantage varying from 36%-172% by discipline and year.

Deployed in October 2009, OpenBU is the place to discover journal articles, books, theses and dissertations, audio and video lectures, presentations, learning objects, and digitized content from the libraries’ collections. With NEH funding, ASOR, the American Schools of Oriental Research, is digitizing the organization’s archives for deposit into OpenBU.
