The Meaning of Membership: Judith Sandonato

Her Voice. Her Message. Judith Sandonato

Voice of Judith Sandonato, BUWG 2nd Vice President ad interim and Chair of the Membership Committee and Chief of Staff, Office of the Provost

Why do people join organizations? For me, it’s always been about connection – making concrete connections to a place or an institution, or a cause through like-minded people who share my passions.

Throughout my life, when I’ve joined organizations or committees, like my local Episcopal church, a political campaign, a professional association, or an alumni group, it has not only been to contribute to essential fundraising efforts for important causes and institutions but also about making connections with like-minded people. These relationships and philanthropic efforts have truly enriched my life.

I was first introduced to the BU Women’s Guild after attending some Lunch & Learns lectures about a decade ago. I admired the Guild for amplifying the voices of female administrators and faculty by sharing their deep industry knowledge, essential research, and career experiences. I always walked away from these events proud to be working at BU and connecting with these amazing individuals, which eventually inspired me to join the Guild.

An additional point of inspiration for me is the Guild’s commitment to supporting graduate women at the University. Each year, the Guild, in partnership with BU Office of Residential Life, provides residential support for 16 students at a nominal cost. The Fisk House, located on Bay State Road, is a subsidized graduate student residence at Boston University.

It has been compelling to read and listen to the students’ stories.  They share their deep appreciation for the essential support this cooperative housing provides. They share their academic experiences and successes and outline the important financial support and morale boost that the Guild awards provide.

“I have made connections with many smart, funny, talented women around the University that I otherwise would never have had the opportunity to meet in my work life.”

I have served as a committee member and officer because I am passionate about supporting the good work the Guild is doing through dynamic programming and its unwavering support of graduate students. As a bonus, I have made connections with many smart, funny, talented women around the University that I otherwise would never have had the opportunity to meet in my work life. Their willingness to share their time, talents, and wisdom inspires me on a regular basis!

What are the benefits of membership? It can mean attending Lunch & Learns to gain knowledge about the amazing research of BU professors and to find professional inspiration from senior administrators.

Membership can mean serving on a committee that provides scholarships or housing to BU graduate students.

Membership can mean connecting with other BU colleagues across the University to network, make career connections, and better collaborate in your work.

I hope you feel inspired to join or renew your membership with this amazing organization we call the BU Women’s Guild.
