BU Students for Justice in Palestine Solidarity Vigil

About 200 people gathered on the BU Beach Wednesday, October 18, for a BU Students for Justice in Palestine solidarity vigil. The aim of the student group was to create a space for mourning, prayer, and remembrance for the Palestinians who lost their lives this week and to show solidarity with Palestine. People of all faiths were invited to join the vigil. Speakers shared their thoughts about the situation, read poems, and offered prayers. Since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, and Israel responded with deadly air strikes, it’s estimated that nearly 3,500 people in Gaza have died, while in Israel the death toll is 1,400. Some 200 people have also been taken hostage by Hamas. Photo by Cydney Scott

  1. A Palestinian vigil can’t even be reported on without mention of “Hamas” as the last word. But the vigils held for Israel mention only “Israeli and Palestinian” casualties. I don’t see any mention of IDF atrocities on the articles for the Israeli vigils. If this institution wants to feign neutrality at least make it a little less transparent. Disappointed

  2. It is time the Palestinians have a nation state free from governmental oversight and interference from Israel. There will be no peace in Israel while there is a policy expanding Jewish settlements on Palestinian lands, and marginalization of Palestinians rights. Further, the U.S. must become a conscientious and unbiased arbiter of disputes between Israel and the Palestinians. Currently, the U.S. Foreign Policy with regard to West Asia is tremendously flawed, and add to a combustible environment. We keep hearing that “Israel has a right to defend itself.” That position is acceptable where we also affirm that Palestinians have a right to defend themselves, and a right to self-determination.
