MLK Memorial on Boston Common

Part of Boston’s memorial initiative to Martin Luther King, Jr. (GRS’55, Hon.’59) and Coretta Scott King, the towering bronze sculpture (20 feet high) on the Boston Common titled The Embrace, which depicts the couple’s interlocking arms, will be unveiled on January 13, 2023, with a celebratory gala following on January 15, King’s birthday. The bronze chunks of the 20-foot-tall, 40-foot-wide sculpture commemorating the partnership between King and his wife, who met while King was studying at BU, traveled nearly 3,000 miles from Washington state, where they were created by conceptual artist Hank Willis Thomas.
