LGBTQIA+ Scholar Series Lecture - Does it matter if you're born that way? -- a presentation and discussion on the evolution of anti-gay and anti-trans attitudes
- Starts: 12:00 pm on Friday, December 12, 2025
- Ends: 1:15 pm on Friday, December 12, 2025
Our December Scholar Series speaker is Victor Kumar, Associate Professor of Philosophy, College of Arts & Sciences; Director of Graduate Placement; Director, Center for Philosophy & History of Science. His talk is called, Does it matter if you're born that way? -- a presentation and discussion on the evolution of anti-gay and anti-trans attitudes. The idea that sexual orientation is innate and early-emerging has accelerated LGBTQ+ progress but now risks impeding it. Sexual development is more diverse than the familiar "born that way" narrative would suggest. Recognizing this diversity means facing up to the role of social learning in identity-formations -- and considering policy implications. The Scholar Series, a signature program of the LGBTQIA+ Center for Faculty & Staff, is a monthly, facilitated virtual space where BU scholars showcase their recent LGBTQIA+ scholarly research. This year’s Scholar Series theme is Meeting This Moment.
Open to all BU faculty, staff, and students.
