Gaylord H. Patterson

Gaylord Patterson was born on August 18, 1866 in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania. Throughout his life, he was devoted both to ministry and education. He attended Allegheny College and Ohio Wesleyan University before attending Yale University, where he earned a Ph.D. in 1890. After earning his doctorate, he married Millicent Louise Debber, from Toronto, Canada. The couple had one child together, E. Louise. He continued his education, studying at Boston University School of Theology (1892) and Harvard University (M.A. 1983).

For the next fourteen years, Patterson was a minister in the Methodist Church.

His career as a professor began in 1907, when he took a post in history and economics at Williamette University. Three years after joining the faculty, he advanced to the position of dean of the college.  Patterson spent a year at the University of Wisconsin before taking a joining the faculty of Dickinson College. There, he taught economics, sociology, and political science. He spent 24 years as a teacher there, retiring in 1936.

After a long illness, Patterson passed away in 1940.
