José F. Mata

José F. Mata is a Los Angeles-based psychotherapist helping and supporting clients through perceived unbalance, chaos and “stuckness.” Specializing in helping people suffering with anxiety, depression, trauma, substance abuse, relationship issues and challenges connected to sexual orientation, José received his Masters of Art in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University Los Angeles and his undergraduate degree from New York University.

José’s lengthy clinical experience is within community mental health. As a therapist with one of Southern California’s most renowned social service agencies, José supports people living with chronic homelessness, psychiatric hospitalizations and mental illness including psychosis, trauma and personality disorders. In addition to individual and family sessions, José has provided group treatment on Mindfulness, Illness Management and Recovery and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. At the Los Angeles LGBT Center – the world’s largest LGBT social service provider – José supported people with issues related to sexual orientation, substance abuse, depression, anxiety and self-esteem. He also co-facilitated a domestic violence support group. In addition to his clinical work, José is a course facilitator at Boston University’s Graduate School of Social Work through their on-line masters program.

José has specialized training in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), which is particularly effective for treating trauma. He is also trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which helps clients boost happiness by modifying dysfunctional emotions, behaviors and thoughts.

José is a Diplomat of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy and has a broad range of clinical trainings. For his overarching commitment to social services, he has been recognized by the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, the United Health Foundation, and the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health.
