Bio

Betty J. Ruth directs the MSW/MPH program and teaches in the Ethics department. A passionate advocate for public health social work, she provides broad leadership to advance its practice. Most recently, Ruth served as principal investigator for “Advancing Leadership in Public Health Social Work Education (ALPS),” a project funded by the Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) and headquartered at BUSSW’s Center for Innovation in Social Work & Health (CISWH). To date, the project has produced three resources: ALPS MSW/MPH Program Handbook, ALPS Recommendations to the Field and ALPS Public Health Social Work Toolkit. Ruth is co-principal investigator for another HRSA-funded project, “Primary Care Training and Enhancement Program at Boston Medical Center.”

Ruth’s practice background is in substance use disorder treatment and prevention, cardiovascular disease prevention and infant mental health promotion. She serves in various leadership positions in professional organizations: She is co-founder and director of the Group for Public Health Social Work Initiatives, a working group dedicated to public health social work advocacy, training and research; membership director for the American Public Health Association’s Public Health Social Work Section; and consulting editor for Health and Social Work and Journal of Social Work in Public Health.
