BU School of Social Work Professors Receive NIAAA Grant
Immersion training model will equip faculty and students nationwide with vital empirically-supported alcohol and drug treatment methods
The Boston University School of Social Work Center for Addictions Research and Services (CARS) professors Dr. Lena Lundgren (Center director) and Dr. Christopher Salas-Wright have received a new National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) R25 Grant. Responding to an urgent need to increase the number of graduate–level social workers with expertise in empirically-supported alcohol and other drug identification and treatment methods, the grant will provide key funding to support training of social work faculty and students.
An immersion training model, the Alcohol and Other Drugs Education Program (ADEP), builds on Boston University’s extensive interdisciplinary expertise in alcohol and drug education and research. Fellowships will be available to equip 100 social work faculty members from a total of 50 accredited graduate schools of social work nationwide with alcohol and drug identification and treatment methods. The program will also train faculty on how to best integrate these topics into the standard Master of Social Work clinical practice curriculum.
Fellowships are available to support ADEP training and will be available in June 2017. These fellowships will include full funding for travel, housing at Boston University apartments (suites with shared living spaces and private bedrooms), and food as well as a small stipend for their participation in the research component of the grant. Nominations are currently being accepted.
