BUSSW Leads Global HIV-Stigma Research

Palms racing up towards camera

BUSSW researchers are leading a multidisciplinary study aimed at deepening the understanding of HIV-related stigma and its impact on the wellbeing of People Living with AIDS (PLWA) and their communities in sub-Saharan Africa. The research, led by Professor Margaret Lombe and Assistant Dean of Teaching and Innovation, Lyndsey McMahan, from Boston University School of Social Work (BUSSW) identifies factors contributing to HIV-stigma, its manifestations, and its effects on individuals and communities.

Future research phases will include consultations with experts, listening sessions with community partners, and a Knowledge Sharing Platform that brings together academics, practitioners, and community representatives to share insights and strategies for change.

As part of this ongoing work, the research team hosted a recent webinar convening a multidisciplinary panel of experts to discuss the current state of knowledge surrounding HIV-stigma in sub-Saharan Africa and other low- and middle-income countries. The session drew an engaged audience of academic collaborators, community organizations, and public officials from across Boston.

The expert panel underscored the urgent need for collaborative, community-driven approaches to dismantle stigma and improve the lives of people affected by HIV/AIDS.
