3/28: CISWH & The BUSSW Votes Initiative Host Conversation on Upholding Social Work Values in Voting & Advocacy

The Center for Innovation in Social Work & Health (CISWH) at Boston University School of Social Work (BUSSW) and the BUSSW Votes initiative kick off their new three-part event series From Ballots to Better Health with the virtual event “Combatting Disinformation and Voting for Social Determinants of Health.”

The event features a conversation between Timothy Clancy, PhD, a research scientist at the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism at the University of Maryland, and BUSSW student Vanessa Navarro (MSW’24), a fellow at Vot-ER and democracy fellow at the Campus Voter Project at BUSSW. Clancy and Navarro will discuss how social workers can leverage their understanding of systemic injustices to vote discerningly and advocate for policies that uphold social work values amid the rampant disinformation of the current political and social climate.

CISWH Director Tami Gouveia and Diane Crowley, director of the BUSSW Fall River Campus and BUSSW Votes representative, will give opening and closing remarks.

1.25 national continuing education credits (free) are available to social workers licensed in the U.S. after the completion of a brief post-event quiz.

Timothy Clancy is an assistant research scientist at START, the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism at the University of Maryland. His current research focuses on understanding violent radicalization as a system, the terror contagion hypothesis for public mass killings, and advancing methods for modeling social complexity through computer simulations integrated with AI. He is the founder of Dialectic Simulations Consulting, LLC and a writer and video commentator.

Vanessa Navarro is an MSW student at BUSSW. In addition to her work as a democracy fellow with the Campus Voter Project at BUSSW, Navarro is a field intern at Vot-ER, a nonprofit organization that helps integrate civic engagement into healthcare. Her involvement stems from an interest in expanding civic engagement in communities and ensuring that voting rights are protected for all citizens. Prior to pursuing her MSW degree at BUSSW, Navarro earned an associate’s degree in Counseling and Human Services at Hillsborough Community College and volunteered with Hillsborough County’s Head Start Program, Tampa Housing Authority, and Tampa Crossroads BeWell Center. She is a member of the Phi Alpha National Honor Society and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), and was elected as the BSW representative for the NASW Florida Chapter for the 2022-2023 term.
