Costs
Students who are eligible for services can schedule an appointment at no cost—the cost is covered by the Health & Wellness fee included in BU’s tuition. Certain services and supplies will have a cost depending on your health insurance plan:
- If you have the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), many services are covered with no additional cost to you. These include physical exams and screenings, lab tests, and immunizations. Learn more about all of the benefits of SHIP.
- If you do not have SHIP, the cost of certain services are your responsibility. You can have these costs billed to your health insurance provider or submit them yourself for reimbursement. Contact your insurance provider to find out what costs may be fully or partially covered by your plan.
If you are referred to healthcare services outside of SHS or are prescribed medication, co-pays and additional costs will apply.
Costs for common services & supplies at SHS
Mental Health Services
For
students who are eligible for services at SHS, there is no cost for counseling or psychiatry appointments with our clinicians, and we do not bill insurance. Our support groups are also free and open to all BU students.
If you have SHIP and are referred to an outside provider, a $10 copay will be applied to each visit. For any medication prescribed by an SHS Psychiatrist, the cost will vary based on the specific medication and your insurance coverage.
Survivor Support Services
For
students who are eligible for services at SHS, all
survivor support services, including individual counseling, support groups, medical, legal, and academic advocacy, are provided free of charge for eligible students. SARP will not bill your insurance.
Immunizations
If you have SHIP, immunizations are covered with no additional cost to you.
If you do not have SHIP, you will be billed the following amounts, which you can submit to your health insurance provider for reimbursement. Contact your insurance provider to find out what costs are fully or partially covered by your plan.

STI Tests
If you have SHIP, STI testing is covered with no additional cost to you. It’s also confidential because you are the
subscriber to the plan.
If you have another health insurance plan, you will be billed the following amounts, which can be billed directly to your insurance, or you can submit them to your health insurance provider for reimbursement. Contact your insurance provider to find out what costs are fully or partially covered by your plan.
Sometimes it’s important that costs stay private. If you are concerned about privacy or safety if a parent or spouse learns about STI testing on an Explanation of Benefits, you have options:
- Pay for STI tests yourself (“out of pocket”). You will be charged the following amounts to your student account, and then you can select your method of payment. This option is confidential because no one else will be notified of your test.
- If you have a Massachusetts-based insurance plan, you can request that your health insurance provider only send you the Explanation of Benefits and not the policyholder (who may be a parent or spouse). Use our script to help you call to request this.
