BU Recovery Community

A welcoming community of BU students in recovery from substance use

The BU Recovery Community (BURC) is here for you – whether you’re in long-term recovery or are just starting your recovery journey.

At its core, BURC connects BU students who understand the challenges and joys of recovery. BURC can also help connect you with BU and community resources to support your well-being and long-term recovery. BURC is not affiliated with any 12-step or therapeutic program and embraces all pathways of recovery.

What we do

BURC can help connect you with others and get recovery support. Every person’s recovery journey is different. BURC is here to support you in the ways that work for you.

We offer:

  • A supportive community to build friendships with other BU students in recovery
  • Weekly All Recovery Meetings with student-led discussions about recovery
  • Social events like movie nights, coffee meet-ups, and trivia that are substance-free
  • Group chats to stay connected with other BURC members
  • Advocacy & education opportunities to raise awareness and reduce recovery stigma

What is it like being a part of the BU Recovery Community?

“For me, being a member of the BURC has really involved finding ‘my people’ at BU. I did undergrad at a school without a recovery community, and during my time there, I felt isolated from most social spaces because of my relationship to substances. BURC has given me a community of people who are not only my classmates, but who understand that intimate and sensitive part of my life. I’ve really treasured having an overlap between my recovery world and my professional life.”

“As a BURC member, I have really loved having regular contact with other students in recovery. The BURC has an active Groupme with other BU students in recovery and hosts social events where we can connect outside of a school setting, such as movie nights, bowling, trivia, and coffee meet-ups. I’ve also really loved engaging the broader BU community through recovery education panels, BU Today articles, and other opportunities to reduce stigma about substance use disorder.”
