Fun & Free Ways To Stay Active In Boston This Summer

By Lauren O’Brien, MS, RD, LDN, CSSD

Summer is just around the corner. With longer days and warmer temperatures on the horizon, why not bring your fitness routine outside? Boston offers a number of fun and totally free outdoor fitness opportunities that allow you to break a sweat without breaking the bank.

Esplanade Fitness Classes
Each summer, a new array of free outdoor fitness classes find their home on the Esplanade as part of the Healthy, Fit & Fun Series.  This year’s lineup includes things like Zumba, Sunset Yoga, Bootcamp, and a running club.  Classes are open to the public and very popular. Find out more and save your spot by pre-registering for classes here.

Boston Parks Fitness Series
The Boston Public Health Commission provides free fitness classes every day of the week at area parks. There is truly something for everyone; Line Dancing, walking groups, and High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). Classes start June 3rd. You can find more information here.

November Project
On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings you can join a group of fellow Bostonians to stomp out Harvard’s stadium and conquer Summit Ave. This group is all about community so you’ll probably walk away with a few new friends too. Join the November Project movement here.

Memorial Drive and the Charles River Esplanade
Both of these iconic Boston pathways boast plenty of fitness opportunities (and beautiful views)! Whether you want to run a loop around the river or utilize the bike path, these spots have many points of access. Not to mention Memorial Drive closes off the area from Western Ave to Mount Auburn Street on Sundays from 11am to 7pm for the public to walk, bike, or run.

Prudential Center Outdoor Fitness Classes
The Prudential Center is not just for shopping this summer. Instead, you can find your way outside the mall to the South Garden where fitness classes will run every Wednesday evening from 6-7p.  See the schedule and register for the free classes here.

Whatever way you choose to stay active this summer, Boston has something to offer. Whether you plan to try something new or continue on your favorite running path, the important thing is to keep moving.  Make sure to keep hydrated and have regular snacks on hand to stay fueled and focused throughout the summer months.
