Gluten Free Pantries at BU Go Nut Free

GF Pantry

By Liz Sauter, RDN, LDN

In honor of Food Allergy Awareness Week the Sargent Choice Nutrition Center and BU Dining Services are sharing some updates to the Gluten Free Pantries on campus.  After a successful year-long pilot of a nut free policy in the pantries, the Gluten Free pantries are officially peanut and tree nut free.  The new policy was developed to create a safe environment not just for gluten-free students, but also for students with anaphylactic peanut and tree nut allergies.

What are the Gluten Free Pantries & where are they located?
The Gluten Free Pantries are locked rooms located in each residential dining hall that students with access can enter by swiping in with their BUID. The Gluten Free Pantries contain:

  • Individually-wrapped snacks, baked goods, entrees, and condiments
  • Gluten-free bread products
  • Gluten-free proteins such as deli meat, hummus, and cheese
  • Microwave & toaster

The pantries are designed to supplement the diets of students with food-related medical conditions.

How to Obtain Access to the Gluten Free Pantries:
Students requiring access to the Gluten Free Pantries on campus must attend a training session with a dietitian from the Sargent Choice Nutrition Center. Multiple training sessions are held during move-in weekend as well as throughout the rest of the academic year as needed. To register for a training session during move-in weekend, email Elizabeth Sauter, RDN, LDN at esauter@bu.edu. During the academic year, students can register for a training via the Gluten Free Pantry Request Form.

Who Should Request Access?
The Gluten Free Pantries are designed for students with food-related medical conditions. These conditions include, but are not limited to:

  • Celiac Disease
  • Gluten-Intolerance
  • Anaphylactic peanut and/or tree nut allergies
  • Multiple anaphylactic allergies
