The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer and donor powered charity committed to supporting the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation works hard to be sure that every dollar makes the biggest impact possible in childhood cancer research. The Foundation has held several Research Priorities Summits with many of the country’s leading pediatric oncology researchers participating to advise the staff and board of directors on funding priorities. The St. Baldrick’s team and Scientific Advisors meet regularly to be sure St. Baldrick’s funds make the greatest impact on pediatric cancer research.

Boston University has been invited to submit names for the King Faisal Prize in Science in the field of Chemistry and for King Faisal Prize in Medicine on the topic of Pandemics and vaccine development for the Year 2023. Launched by the King Faisal Foundation (KFF) and granted for the first time in 1979, the King Faisal Prize (KFP) recognizes the outstanding works of individuals and institutions in five major categories: Service to Islam, Islamic Studies, Arabic Language and Literature, Medicine, and Science.

INTERNAL MATERIALS DUE: Friday, November 19, 2021. Science and Technology Centers (STCs) support innovative, complex research and education projects that require large-scale and long-term awards. As first defined in the 2019 solicitation, “STCs focus on creating new scientific paradigms, establishing entirely new scientific disciplines and developing transformative technologies which have the potential for broad scientific or societal impact.” This STC competition is open to all areas of science and engineering supported by NSF and there are no priority areas identified in the solicitation.

The Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Program serves to increase access to multi-user scientific and engineering instrumentation for research and research training in our Nation’s institutions of higher education and not-for-profit scientific/engineering research organizations. An MRI award supports the acquisition or development of a multi-user research instrument that is, in general, too costly and/or not appropriate for support through other NSF programs.
Limited Submission Funding Opportunity: Brain Research Foundation Seed Grant
INTERNAL MATERIALS DUE: Monday, November 15, 2021. The objective of the BRF Seed Grant Program is to support new and innovative projects, especially those of junior faculty, who are working in new research directions. BRF Seed Grant awards are not intended to supplement existing grants. Each total grant is limited to $80,000 (direct costs) for a two year grant period. The first grant payment of $40,000 will be made upon completion of the Seed Grant Acceptance Form (June 2021).

INTERNAL MATERIALS DUE: Wednesday, December 1, 2021. The Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers (MRSECs) program provides sustained support of materials research and education of the highest quality while addressing fundamental problems in science and engineering. Each MRSEC addresses research of a scope and complexity requiring the scale, synergy, and multidisciplinarity provided by a campus-based research center. The MRSECs support materials research infrastructure in the United States, promote active collaboration between universities and other sectors, including industry and international organizations, and contribute to the development of a national network of university-based centers in materials research, education, and facilities. A MRSEC may be located at a single institution, or may involve multiple institutions in partnership, and is composed of two to three Interdisciplinary Research Groups, IRGs, each addressing a fundamental materials science topic aligned with the Division of Materials Research, DMR.

The National Science Foundation (NSF), in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), U.S. Department of Education (ED), U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), and IBM Corporation, released a solicitation for the third competition of the National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research Institutes. Like the first two competitions, the current solicitation focuses on specific research themes.

INTERNAL MATERIALS DUE: Monday, November 8, 2021. The research program focuses on Basic Science that produces scientific breakthroughs and paradigm shifting work. They fund projects in two specific areas. Funded projects will be distinctive and novel in their approach, question the prevailing paradigm, have the potential to break open new territory in their field, or create an entirely new area of study. Past grants have supported pioneering biological and physical science research and engineering, including the development of promising new technologies, instrumentation and methodologies.
