Vivek Goyal
Associate Professor, College of Engineering
Vivek K. Goyal is Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Boston University. He was a Member of Technical Staff at Bell Labs (1998-2001), Senior Research Engineer at Digital Fountain (2001-2003), Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley (2003), faculty member in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2004-2013), and Adviser to 3dim Tech (2013-2014).
Goyal specializes in signal processing, with a recent emphasis on computational imaging, especially the exploitation of efficient information representations and the development of new imaging modalities that are dependent on computation. His other main lines of work include data compression for robust transmission; theory and algorithms for sparse signal processing; and models for human decision making. He has published about 170 papers in these areas and co-authored a textbook (Foundations of Signal Processing, Cambridge University Press 2014).
He serves on the Editorial Board of Foundations and Trends in Signal Processing, on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discover, and in several roles for the IEEE Signal Processing Society. He has co-chaired the SPIE Wavelets & Sparsity conference series since 2006. He has been a plenary speaker at various international conferences, including the IEEE Data Compression Conference in 2009, the IEEE International Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing in 2009, and the 20th European Signal Processing Conference in 2012.
He is the recipient of several awards, including the 2002 IEEE Signal Processing Society Magazine Award and the Best Paper Award of the 2014 IEEE International Conference on Image Processing. Additionally, work he supervised has received three student best paper awards and four MIT thesis awards. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi. He is also a Fellow of the IEEE
