Access and use of institutional data is necessary to develop and maintain robust programs, processes and operations.  However, use of this data is balanced against access guidelines and policies to help ensure any sensitive data is appropriately handled and stored.

Administrative Data Systems

As with any large institution, there are a significant number of data systems and sources of record.  Access to these are dependent on business need and role.  BU’s Information Systems & Technology is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the administrative systems supporting the university operations, including financial, learning management, development and student information systems and business and academic data warehouses.  More information about each system is available on TechWeb.

Data Access and Use

Data is among the institutions most valuable resources, and must be managed accordingly.   Managing this effort is BU’s Data Governance Program, which combines the expertise and oversight of individuals from across the institution to create resources around access, use, security, and sharing of university data.

To help navigate through through the policies and guidelines around data use and access, Analytical Services & Institutional Research is building and maintaining a set of guidelines and procedures for data use and access as part of the University’s Data Governance Program.  More information is available on the Data Access and Use page.

The roles and responsibilities for access to the University’s data resources are outlined in Boston University’s Data Access Management Policy.

Data Collection

Primary data collection, particularly that using human subjects, is carefully regulated to ensure the rights and welfare of the subjects involved as well as adherence to legal and administrative standards.  Before conducting survey or other information collection involving human subjects, you may need the review and approval of the Institutional Review Board (IRB).  Boston University has maintains IRBs on both the Charles River and Medical Campus:

Survey research can be an ideal way to collect information about students, employees, or others to inform administrative or academic projects.  To assist in developing and conducting surveys, Analytical Services & Institutional Research provides resources and guidelines, as well as consultation services in this area.
