Jingwen Deng (Mertz lab) became involved with research in the area of neurophotonics in Dr. Marc Sommer’s lab as a Master’s student at Duke University. She began by applying adeno-associated virus to trace presynaptic and postsynaptic neurons in non-human primate brain. She received her B.E. in Pharmaceutical Engineering at Sichuan University in 2019, M.S. in Biomedical Engineering at Duke University in 2021, and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Biomedical Engineering at Boston University. Her graduate studies are taking place in the Biomicroscopy Lab, where she will be developing novel optical setups for all-optical interrogation of neural circuits. The goal is to perform optogenetic stimulation that mimics recorded natural neuronal firing patterns with high spatiotemporal precision. She expects to graduate in May 2026.
