Services
Optical ID&S
The Optical and Instrument Design Services (OIDS) offers research affiliates contract based assistance in the design, fabrication and optimization of optics related instruments. We have worked with multiple groups across campus in building microscopes that advances research in neuroscience. Some of these systems include
- Polarization Sensitive Optical Coherence Tomography
- Two Photon Microscope with Extended Foci
- Wearable Miniature Microscopes
- Splayed Fiber Microscopes
- Optical Coherence Tomography with Serial Sectioning for Large Tissue Block-face Imaging
- Large Field of View, Multi-ROI Two Photon Microscope
If you need assistance in …
- Electro-Optics and Opto-mechanical Design
- Optical Design and Optical Simulation (ZEMAX)
- Sequential and Non-sequential optical ray tracing
- LabVIEW Software Programming
Please feel free to contact us. We also have experience and can offer assistance with commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) microscopes such as Thorlabs and Bruker.

Microscope Imaging Assistance
- Optical Coherence Tomography
We can assist to operate OCT system, including conventional OCT, OCT angiogram and doppler shift OCT, how to process acquired OCT data, we can discuss which parameters you should use for your application, such as numerical aperture, resolution, pixel size, etc.
And also we can integrate a sectioning device with OCT to perform serial sectioning imaging.

- 2 Photon Microscopy
The BU NPC offers training and assistance for the use of our Bruker Investigator 2-Photon Microscope. All users are required to schedule and attend a training session regardless of previous experience prior to being able to schedule their own time. After, additional training and troubleshooting can be scheduled as needed based on the availability of NPC members. This ranges from basic troubleshooting of scanning issues to experimental setup and procedure.
Training Available:
Overview of two-photon fundamentals
Training in use of Bruker Investigator 2P
Angiography
Calcium Imaging
FLIM/PLIM Acquisition
2-Photon Key Features:
Tunable Laser source (680-1200 nm)
Two-Channel Fluorescence imaging with swappable filter sets
Resonant scanning module for video rate imaging
TCSPC module for FLIM/PLIM Applications
