Advances in neurophotonics are transforming how we see and understand the living brain.

From subcellular imaging of proteins and synapses to noninvasive monitoring of brain activity in freely moving people, optical methods now let us watch and modulate neural circuits, blood flow, and metabolism in real time. These technologies are reshaping our understanding of electrical excitability, neuroglial interactions, neurovascular signaling, and hemodynamics in both health and disease.

At the interface of the neurosciences and photonics, the BU Neurophotonics Center brings together engineers, physicists, neuroscientists and clinicians to build and deploy powerful new tools for brain research. Our mission is to develop, translate, and democratize photonics technologies that advance fundamental discovery, improve brain health across the lifespan, and enable real-world impact—from the lab bench to the clinic, the community, and everyday life.
