Event Highlights: Is China’s New Silk Road Lending a Helping Hand in Latin America’s Current Crisis?

The Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University is hosting a virtual conference series titled“Assessing China’s Belt and Road Initiative” to examine the economic, social, political, and security impacts of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Since the BRI cuts across regions and topics, all seven of the Pardee School’s regional and thematic centers are sponsoring events related to their particular focus, including book launches, talks, and interviews.

The Center for Latin American Studies is delighted as part of this initiative to present this talk by Amb. Jorge Heine on the BRI in Latin America.

Amb. Heine is Research Professor at BU’s Pardee School. He is a lawyer, IR scholar and diplomat with a special interest in the international politics of the Global South. He was most recently a Public Policy Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington D.C. (2018-2019). He has served as ambassador of Chile to China (2014-2017), to India (2003-2007) and to South Africa (1994-1999), and as a Cabinet Minister in the Chilean Government.

Responding to Amb. Heine is Kevin Gallagher, Professor of Global Development Policy at the Pardee School and Director of BU’s Global Development Policy Center

The event is moderated by Dr. Grant Rhode, an affiliated scholar of BU’s Center for the Study of Asia and series convener.
