Peacebuilding in Colombia Academic Summer Program 2017

Armed Conflict, Peace Processes and the challenges of Peacebuilding in Colombia‘ will be delivered by the Political Science department at Uniandes. The 3-week program will be run by Angelika Rettberg, Director of the Masters in Peacebuilding at Uniandes and will explore the recent history of the Colombian conflict and the challenges of the current peace process following the referendum result earlier this month.

The course combines lectures and seminars taught by leading academics from Uniandes with educational site visits. Students will meet with President Santos’ Communications team to discuss the influence of public opinion on the peace negotiations, visit the UN Development Project, the Center for Transitional Justice and the Colombian Congress. At the Reparation of Victims Unit, they will engage with people directly affected by the conflict, such as ex-paramilitaries and internal refugees, and during a walking tour of Bogota’s political Graffiti, they will see different representations of the parties involved in the conflict and the peace process.

The program is open to undergraduate students from a range of arts, humanities and social science subjects, and is aimed particularly at those with an interest in conflict resolution and international relations in Latin America. It is arranged as a package that includes accommodation, and students will be housed as a group in supervised hotel accommodation close to the university campus. It includes a schedule of site visits and excursions as part of the academic provision, as well as a supplementary calendar of social activities.

Last year’s course hosted students from Queen’s University Belfast, the University of Bristol, the University of Sussex, Aberystwyth University, the University of Southern California, San Francisco State University, Queen’s Ontario and the University of British Columbia. You can read reviews from many of these students online here and here.
