We’re thrilled to announce Sophie Letcher as a featured speaker at IDEA Con, the world’s largest cross-university student innovation conference, hosted by Innovate@BU on October 25!

About Sophie

Growing up in Montague, MA, she earned her B.A. in Neuroscience from Kenyon College before working as a technical research assistant at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Her passion for sustainable solutions led her to the world of cellular agriculture, where she pursued a PhD at Tufts University as a New Harvest Research Fellow. Specifically, she isolated and expanded cells from caterpillars and studied their nutrition, scalability, and ways to optimize for lower-cost production. Compared with “traditional” livestock species, insect cells are more resilient and adaptable resulting in simpler and less costly production.

Inspired by her work, Sophie co-founded EntoCellular, a Tufts spin-out company creating novel, sustainable, and ethical animal proteins for pet food. Her entrepreneurial journey has been shaped by support from the Tufts Derby Entrepreneurship Center and Mass Challenge Switzerland Accelerator. She’s excited to continue learning and finding ways to improve the current food production system using biotechnology!
