This revolutionary technological moment brings new human and ethical challenges that require global humanistic thinking.

The Humanities in the World Initiative (HWI) addresses these challenges by combining Boston University’s humanities, social science, and natural science research with institutions around the world. It supports international collaborations that embed research in everyday life, including local diasporic culture, human vulnerability, the effects of gender and socio-economic difference, the ethics of AI, and popular culture’s role in democracy.

The HWI:

  • supports local and international initiatives, faculty exchange, and partnerships with research projects and large-scale international grants at other colleges and universities
  • partners with local organizations (e.g., the French Consulate of Boston, the Spanish in Boston project) and BU area studies centers to sponsor visits by leading humanities researchers, writers, and artists
