Prof. Menegon to Participate in Colloquium at the Institute for Advanced Jesuit Studies at Boston College

Associate Professor of Chinese History Eugenio Menegon will participate in a colloquium at the Institute for Advanced Jesuit Studies at Boston College. The event, titled “Calamity from Within? Jesuits, Papal Legates, and Chinese Imperial Envoys in the Eighteenth Century” will take place on Thursday April 12th from 3 to 5pm at the John J. Burns Library at Boston College. Institute Fellow Elisa Frei will also present. For more information and to RSVP, click here.

Elisa Frei and Eugenio Menegon will focus their presentations on the lives of some Jesuits of the China mission during the notorious Chinese Rites Controversy (1635-1742), a theological and political struggle between Beijing and Rome. These Jesuits traveled across the oceans, cared deeply about the issues, took sides, played politics, and suffered dire consequences for doing so. Their experiences represent a microcosm of the Controversy and reveal its global reach as a clash of cultures and a unique phenomenon in early modern intellectual and religious history.
