APHI Seminar Welcomes Oxford Professor Jay Sexton
On January 25, the American Political History seminar welcomed Jay Sexton, University Lecturer in American History and Fellow of Corpus Christi College at Oxford University. Author of TThe Monroe Doctrine: Empire and Nation in Nineteenth Century America (2011) and Debtor Diplomacy: Finance and American Foreign Relations in the Civil War Era, 1837-1873 (2005), Sexton discussed his paper, “Willian H. Seward in the World.” Focusing on the world tour that the former Secretary of State made after his retirement from public life, Sexton considers how Seward – “the pre- eminent American theorist of foreign policy and international affairs in the mid-nineteenth century16 – conceived of the world he encountered during his travels. as well as the broader context iof America’s role in the world in which Seward’s journey took place.
