Global Photo Contest Winners

Global Programs received over 420 photos representing all corners of the globe and submitted by more than 150 globe trotting faculty, staff, and students in 13 schools/colleges and a handful of administrative offices.

The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prize-winning photos were selected, along with the top 15 in general.

Mushrooming Metropolises

College of Arts and Sciences professor, Lucy Hutyra, forecasts a tripling of urban spaces worldwide by 2030 and the expected growth, at 463,000 square miles, is “more urban land expansion than in all of history.” This growth could threaten hundreds of plant and animal species with extinction, denude forests, and accelerate climate change.

Franz Gastler’s Goal

In 2009, Franz Gastler created Yuwa, an NGO that teaches girls to play soccer, and promotes health and education. Yuwa, which means “youth” in Hindi, started out with about 15 members, most of them under 13, and has grown to approximately 250 girls 10 to 15 years of age. Through Yuwa, the girls have gained confidence, learned teamwork, and become better students.

Student Wins $100,000 to Educate Honduran Youth

Katia Gomez, School of Public Health alumni, took the top prize at the nationally televised VH1Do Something! Awards, which honors young adults for their social change projects. Gomez won a trophy and a $100,000 grant—for creating Educate2Envision, a nongovernmental organization that helps build schools and educate impoverished children, particularly girls, in central Honduras.

Extreme Dentistry in a Faraway Place

Goldman School of Dental Medicine student, Andrew Jorgensen, arrived in Alaska’s Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta by a paddle jumper to reach the destination of his three-week externship which included fixing the teeth of people whose dental decay rate hovers between 7 and 10 times the national average.
