State University of Zanzibar

The Partnership for Global Health Technologies collaborates with the School of Medicine and Health Sciences at the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA). BU undergraduate students work one-on-one throughout the semester with second-year SUZA medical students and medical school faculty on designing and testing a health technology to be used in Zanzibari clinics and hospitals.

SUZA students are essential to integrating the local context and clinical expertise into designs and are our connection to the medical community in Zanzibar. The connections that BU students form with SUZA students also help with greater understanding of Zanzibari health challenges.

SUZA is affiliated with the Mnazi Mmoja Hospital in Stone Town, which allows students access to the type of health facility in which their device could be used. This affiliation provides the opportunity for students to consult with Zanzibari physicians in the development phase of the device.
