Apply to be part of BU’s team for the Emory Global Health Case Competition in March! The application is here and it will close on the November 6th at 11:59 pm. Although BU was placed on the waitlist for the competition, we are conducting a mini case competition onDecember 3 to select BU’s team in preparation for coming off the waitlist. African Food and Peace Foundation Annual Dinner and Fundraiser
Aid for Africa is a charity alliance of U.S.-based nonprofits and their African partners working to help children, families, and communities throughout Sub-Saharan Africa.
AFPF’s 2016 Annual Dinner and Fundraiser will be held on November 3 at the Charles Hotel in Harvard Square. The Dinner and Fundraiser will raise funds for the innovative, rural development projects by our partner organizations Uganda Rural Development and Training Program (URDT) and African Rural University (ARU). It will also be a great opportunity for BUSPH students, faculty, and staff to engage with influential female African leadership. The Dinner and Fundraiser will feature guest speaker Her Excellency Oliver Wonekha, the Ugandan Ambassador to the United States. Throughout her career, Ambassador Wonekha has addressed agricultural issues and has been outspoken on education for women and girls. The Dinner and Fundraiser will be held from 6pm to 9pm at the Charles Hotel in Harvard Square at 1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA 02138. Individual tickets are available for purchase here. Registration Open for Swahili Language with a Health Focus Course with Two Levels!
BU’s African Studies Center is offering “Swahili Language with a Health Focus” on the Medical Campus during the SPRING 2017 Semester, at two levels:
- CAS LE529 A1 - Swahili with a Health Focus 1
- CAS LE530 A1 - Swahili with a Health Focus 2 (prerequisite, previous course in Swahili)
This is a fantastic opportunity for MPH and other students on the MED campus who are interested in working in East Africa. The course is offered for 1 credit. Meeting times will be determined based upon when enrolled students are available. (Depending on interest, more than one section may be offered).
This intensive course will be scheduled for 1 hour & 45 minutes, twice a week. The class will focus on providing students with practical speaking, listening, and reading skills that will be useful in conducting fieldwork and will also highlight East African cultural notions of health.
If you are interested in taking the course please register for CAS LE529 or LE530 as soon as possible via student link. Once you have registered, the instructor will communicate with you directly about scheduling. Contact Professor Geofred Osoro at gosoro@bu.edu if you have questions.
NOTES
- Credits from language courses, will not count toward your MPH degree.
- Students taking 12-17 SPH credits can register for this class without additional tuition expense.

El departamento de Salud Global estará aceptando solicitudes para el programa de intercambio con el Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública (INSP) en Cuernavaca, México para el verano de 2017. Esta pasantía es una gran oportunidad para participar en una intervención en la comunidad y formar parte de un equipo que hace un diagnóstico integral de salud poblacional (DISP) mientras trabaja con alumnos de maestría en el Instituto.
Este programa está diseñado para estudiantes que han completado sus cursos básicos de MPH (bioestadística, epidemiología, y conducta y comportamientos) y tienen un nivel avanzado de español.
Los estudiantes interesados deberán asistir a una de las siguientes sesiones informativas:

Are you looking for a practicum in Latin America? Would you like to gain valuable public health skills through conducting a community health assessment?
The Department of Global Health will be accepting applications for its Summer Exchange Program at the Instituto Nacional de Salud Publica (INSP) in Cuernavaca, Mexico for the summer of 2017. This practicum is a great opportunity to participate in a community health assessment while working alongside MPH candidates at the institute.
This program is designed for students that have successfully completed their first semester (all core courses of the MPH degree) and that have an advanced level of Spanish.
Interested students should attend one of the following information sessions:

Global Health Internship Program: AMOS Hope and Health
Amos Internship Program Description
In our Global Health Practicum + Internship program, students remain at AMOS for five additional weeks (or 200 additional hours) after the practicum to work on projects that have been identified as priority areas by the communities we work with and our primary health care team. Internship teams in the past have contributed to project areas that include: Women's Empowerment, Youth Empowerment, Urban Health, and Nutrition.
*All interns must be a part of the Global Health Practicum before their internship.

Global Health Practicum: AMOS Hope and Health
AMOS Health Practicum Description
Objective: Each summer, AMOS provides a three-week, 120-hour Global Health Practicum course that aims to empower a socially-conscious generation of public health workers. Fostering critical analysis of international health development and social theories of power and privilege, the practicum studies current models and methodologies for improving health in low-resource settings.
Practicum Activities: Students examine current models and methodologies for improving health in low-resource settings over three weeks (or 120 hours). This experience teaches students to build on community strengths and facilitate strategic community empowerment to improve health outcomes. The course will introduce participants to community-based primary healthcare practices and provide hands-on training in rural communities.The Global Health Practicum has no language requirement.
