Research Assistant position available with Last Mile Health

Overview:

In August 2012, Last Mile Health launched a new pilot project to provide lifesaving care to rural communities in the most remote corners of Liberia. We partnered with a small rural clinic and began training a cohort of community health workers (CHW), with the goal of designing an integrated, scalable model for providing community-based care for the top killers of women and children in remote communities. As part of its recovery effort after the end of the Ebola outbreak, the Liberia Ministry of Health has prioritized launching a national community health workforce able to prevent, diagnose, and treat the most life-threatening health conditions. Working side-by-side, LMH and the MOH are designing and implementing a national roll-out of a network of community health workers to stretch the country’s primary health services to the most rural communities to improve maternal and child health and serve as a front-line response for future outbreaks.

Position Summary:

Working under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and Manager of Research & Evaluation, the Research Assistant will support the organization’s evaluation, research, and program planning efforts through the analysis and interpretation of various data streams.

Tasks & Responsibilities:

Manage, clean, and analyze evaluation data from cluster sample surveys, health system records, and qualitative assessments to enable program evaluation and data-driven planning

Clean and analyze routine data from our CHW program and make recommendations for potential programmatic improvements based on findings of analyses

Manage the process of publishing analysis findings in academic journals, including performing literature reviews, writing manuscripts, and managing IRB communications

Support the design and implementation of program evaluations and special studies

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. public health, biostatistics) with a quantitative focus, enrollment in an MPH or similar graduate degree program preferred.
  • Relevant work experience, preferably in a research setting
  • Experience in the evaluation of public health programs preferred
  • Experience working in sub-Saharan Africa is preferred
  • Experience in data processing, analysis, and management
  • Proficiency with a statistical software package (Stata preferred) and experience with complex data analysis
  • Experience conducting literature reviews
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Eagerness to learn new analytical techniques and work with complicated datasets produced within challenging, real-world conditions
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and produce completed projects promptly
  • Strong analytic and critical thinking skills
  • Familiarity with relational databases (e.g. MySQL) and/or qualitative research software is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to write and produce reports and present information clearly and effectively under time constraints

Tanzania Field Program for Summer 2016

The Global Health Department is in negotiations with a partner organization, to offer a field course in Tanzania for Summer 2016.  If approved, this 6–week, 6-credit course, would run from mid-May through June. It will build upon 9 years of experience of offering GH707, the Kenya Field Practicum course.  The new program will engage in health challenges affecting both urban and rural populations. Similar to GH707, students will create data collection instruments, conduct field-based data collection, analyze data, write reports, and present results and recommendations to stakeholders. Successful completion of the program will meet the MPH practicum requirement for eligible SPH students. Those accepted into the program will be offered a Santander Scholarship to help defray the costs of travel. In January 2016, we will hold information sessions about the program, where students can learn how to apply.

Recently we announced that the African Studies Center, will offer a 2-credit course on Swahili Language with a Health Focus (CAS LE491) on the BU Medical Campus Spring 2016. Student interested in taking the Tanzania Field Course or East Africa, are strongly encouraged to take the Swahili course and are asked to please complete this two question survey to gauge their interest and availability, by Friday, December 4 at 11:59 pm.

NOTE - This intensive undergraduate language course will be scheduled for 2 hours twice a week. Students may be able to add the course as part of their full-time course load without additional tuition expense. Language credits will not count toward your MPH degree. A follow-up course may be taught during Fall semester (2016) for returning students who want to further develop their language skills.

The Global Health Initiative (GHI) at Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders
Center (DF/BC) is an interdisciplinary program that focuses on countries with limited resources,
and brings together faculty, fellows, nurses, social workers, psychologists, health educators,
and managers to improve outcomes for children. We are working to establish centers of
excellence in pediatric hematology and oncology in the developing world, and we are training
the next generation of leaders. Our mission is to improve the lives and enhance the care of
children with cancer and blood disorders worldwide. All GHI activities include ongoing efforts
to establish twinning partnerships with sites in low and middle income countries and are
centered around three objectives: Program building (twinning), Education and Research. At

Hospital Egypt 57357 in Cairo, Egypt. CCHE 57357 is one of the top pediatric oncology providers

INTERNSHIP SUMMARY

Foreign Site: Children’s Cancer Hospital Egypt 57357, Cairo, Egypt

The internship will be a team project with 2-3 students who will have the opportunity to apply
global public health skills to a realistic and vital issue on the quality of care of children with
cancer in Egypt. It will focus on a quality improvement projects to examine how use of the
Central Venus Access Device (CVAD), nasogastric (NG) tubes and gastrostomy (G) tubes impact
pediatric oncology patient outcomes. At present, a very small percent of hospitalized children
(about 7%) are using a CVAD which results in a number of negative consequences such as pain,
infections, burns, discomfort, and others. The goal is for all eligible new patients (approximately
1900 per year) at CCHE 57357 to have a CVAD placed to minimize extravasations, increase
patient satisfaction and improve outcomes. The goal is for eligible patients meeting criteria to
have NG or G tubes placed is to maintain body weight, and the percentage of lean body mass
during chemotherapy and radiation treatments for cancer. The internship includes a one or
two- week-long site visit to CCHE 57357 (CCHE 57357 will assume the costs for the site visit:
airfare, housing and $500 stipend).

Practicum Position: Project Manager

Project Description: We are seeking a highly organized, self-motivated leader to help run a childhood nutrition project in Lima, Peru. The first phase, including the development and piloting of data collection instruments, has already begun. However, we need someone who can begin the implementation of the project starting in January 2016. This includes collecting baseline data, administering surveys, and collaborating with the local health post. The primary objective of the project is to see if SMS messaging will improve the knowledge of nutrition and the use of micronutrient sprinkles (supplement powder) among mothers with children ages 6-36 months of age living in the peri-urban community of Oasis de Villa, Lima, Peru.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with other team members to implement baseline survey and qualitative focus group discussions, administer hemoglobin tests, manage database
  • Review SMS nutritional information and send weekly SMS to study participants through TextIt application
  • Collaborate with local field staff
  • Plan for Phase 2 (6 months from baseline)
  • Manage team meetings and visit community regularly

Skills:

  • Experience in both quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis
  • Understanding of childhood nutrition and anemia
  • Understanding of TextIt platform or other mHealth tools (if you have taken Wolffy’s mHealth class, that’s a plus!)

Arrival logistics/Housing support: Dr. Gilman’s secretary can arrange for a taxi from the airport upon your arrival. Two apartments are rented by Johns Hopkins professors. Rooms are available for all interns for about $100/month. One apartment is in Miraflores, a district that is considered to be the heart of the tourist center of Lima. The other apartment is located in Magdalena, which is a safe, quiet, residential area of Lima.  Both locations are walking distance from grocery stores, nice restaurants, museums, bars, etc. The commute to the field site is about 45 minutes by bus from Miraflores, and 1.5hrs from Magdalena.

  • Participated in the development of communications materials used to announce the results of  FACTS 001 and the launch of the Global Health Supply Chain Program
  • Drafted recommendations for integration of alcohol treatment and screening to existing operational plans, and examined relationship between alcohol and unprotected sex in Uganda. Conducted a literature review of recent research on condom efficacy resulting in revised condom fact sheets and technical issue briefs.
  • Conducted a systematic literature review on planning and strengthening the Social Service Workforce (SSW), and how the SSW supports the well-being of orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS, their families, and caregivers to draft a State of the Research Report.
  • Developed a comprehensive presentation on the clinical and psychosocial needs of adolescents living with HIV, which was used in a presentation in the Africa Bureau to the Deputy Principles of USAID.

The Global Health Fellows Program (GHFP-II) is a five year cooperative agreement implemented and managed by the Public Health Institute in partnership with Global Health Corps, GlobeMed, Management Systems International and PYXERA Global. GHFP-II is supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

GHFP-II's goal is to improve the effectiveness of USAID health programs by addressing the Agency's immediate and emerging human capacity needs. The program seeks to accomplish this goal first through the recruitment, placement and support of diverse health professionals at the junior, mid and senior levels. These program participants include fellows, interns, corporate volunteers and Foreign Service National professionals. The program then provides substantial performance management and career development support to participants, including annual working planning assistance, and ensures that professional development opportunities are available.

Looking to the future, GHFP-II also seeks to establish a pool of highly-qualified global health professionals that will ensure the Agency's ongoing technical leadership and effectiveness. This objective is supported by an extensive outreach program that brings global health opportunities and specialized career advice to a diverse range of interested individuals, with a particular focus on those underrepresented in the field of global health.

BACKGROUND:

In cooperation with the US Department of State's Office of the US Global AIDS Coordinator, other US Government (USG) partners, international organizations, and nongovernmental organizations, USAID provides global technical leadership on the full range of issues related to HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment; manages numerous research and field support programs; and monitors the impact of the Agency's HIV/AIDS programs. In this endeavor, USAID works very closely with a range of USG agencies involved in the fight against AIDS, such as the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Department of Defense, and Peace Corps. INTRODUCTION:

The Prevention Of Mother To Child Transmission (PMTCT) and Pediatric HIV Intern (Intern) will be assigned to the Technical Leadership and Research (TLR) Division of the Office of HIV/AIDS (OHA) within the Bureau for Global. OHA is the focus of HIV/AIDS technical leadership for USAID and has primary responsibility for leading the Agency's efforts within President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a multibillion, multifaceted approach to combating the disease in more than 120 countries around the world.

OHA supports a variety of pediatric HIV and PMTCT activities. In mid-2014, the "Strengthening High Impact Interventions for an AIDS-free Generation" (AIDSFree) Project was awarded to a consortium of implementing partners led by JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc. AIDSFree is funded and managed by OHA, and aims to improve the quality and effectiveness of HIV and AIDS interventions.

The Intern's primary scope of work will be to coordinate PMTCT and pediatric HIV technical assistance being offered through AIDSFree. S/he will receive day to day guidance from the PMTCT/Pediatric HIV Medical Officer and the Senior Advisor for the Continuum of Clinical Services in the Office of HIV/AIDS as his/her onsite managers. The intern will also work closely with the entire Technical Leadership and Research Division.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Gaining a greater understanding about PEPFAR and international work being done in the area of HIV/AIDS.
  • Gaining experience and expertise in PMTCT and pediatric HIV programming.
  • Gaining experience in program coordination.
  • Deepening skills in collaboration and coordination within a complex organizational and implementation structure.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assisting in the coordination of various AIDSFree-supported technical assistance projects focused on PMTCT and pediatric HIV.
  • Assisting in the preparation of literature reviews and other analytical work as appropriately related to PMTCT and pediatric HIV.
  • Participating in dialogues with AIDSFree partners involved in PMTCT and pediatric HIV.
  • Participating in headquarter-based technical assistance to field teams, as appropriate.
  • Attending program-related events within and outside USAID, as requested.
  • Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational and programming need and/or the Intern's own interests.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently enrolled master's or other post-bachelor's degree candidate in a program related to public health, medicine, international development, or a related field; or, completion of such within past 12 months.
  • Clinical background and/or knowledge of patient care issues preferred.
  • Strong writing and analytic skills.

Position Description:

PIH Mexico seeks a volunteer who can commit ~10 hours/week for 6 months, with a desired start date of October 2015. The Curriculum Writer will assist the Mexico Chief Strategist to refine and document PIH Mexico’s innovative global health curriculum for recent medical graduates.

The global health/social medicine curriculum, comprising 16 modules, is based on adult learning best practices and is unique in Mexico. It has been piloted and developed over two years. The volunteer will create lesson plans and tools for the curriculum to be shared. This role will be substantive for candidates interested in global health education and training.

Overall Responsibilities:

This volunteer will:

  • Discuss curriculum goals and core concepts in depth with Strategist, documenting key ideas
  • Write original lesson plan drafts for any modules that have not been formally documented, based on conversation with the Strategist and past feedback
  • Link the lesson plans with visuals, case studies, and other tools in a simple, user-friendly format
  • Utilize a standardized lesson template to refine layout and style
  • Develop, review and edit curricula and other training documents in preparation for publication and dissemination (including assessing materials for training flow, formatting, consistency, branding and clarity)

Qualifications:

  1. A degree in education, health education, public health or a related field.
  2. Experience in designing, developing, and editing training/educational materials for adults.
  3. Able to commit ~10 hours/week for 6 months.
  4. Strong writing skills and ability to present complex information in a clear and compelling way.
  5. Experience with literature reviews, synthesis of academic articles.

Pathfinder has over five years of experience implementing mHealth projects in seven different countries. Across these projects, Pathfinder uses a variety of mobile tools including: mobile case management applications, data collection tools, geographic information system (GIS) mapping, mobile money, and short message services (SMS) platforms. Pathfinder is currently evaluating and seeking to publish and disseminate the results of several mHealth projects.

The mHealth Research Analyst, under the direction of Pathfinder technical staff and as a member of the Technical Services Unit (TSU), will play an important role in the evaluation and dissemination of project results. Intended dissemination materials include but may not be limited to: conference presentations, technical/project reports, and peer-reviewed journal articles.

Responsibilities:

  1. Support the design and implementation of a mHealth implementation learning study within Pathfinder’s Services de Santé de Qualité pour Haïti project (SSQH, Haiti).
  2. Play a key role in the development of a manuscript for the endline results of Pathfinder’s m4Youth study (Ethiopia). This includes putting analyzed project data into manuscript format for a to be determined journal.
  3. Assist in the analysis and dissemination of data from Pathfinder’s mCenas Project (Mozambique). This includes supporting the qualitative analysis of data collected through the SMS project and supporting the development of a final report along with a peer reviewed manuscript for the project.
  4. Support the Senior Technical Advisor for mHealth to develop and complete two total cost of ownership (TCO) models on mHealth projects (Haiti and Nigeria).
  5. Support the development of posters and oral presentations for conferences in November related to mHealth.

Qualifications:

  1. Current student within a Master of Public Health (MPH), Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) or related graduate program.
  2. Experience in conducting quantitative or qualitative research and analysis for public health studies.
