ASPPH/CDC Allan Rosenfield Global Health Fellowship is Accepting Applications through January 29th!
ASPPH is pleased to offer recent graduates from ASPPH-member, Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH)-accredited schools and programs of public health an exciting opportunity to gain global health experience at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Applications are currently being accepted for the 2015 ASPPH/CDC Allan Rosenfield Global Health Fellowship Program; the deadline to apply is Thursday, January 29, 2015.
In recognition of a career dedicated to improving the health of the world’s most vulnerable populations, ASPPH, with support from CDC, established a fellowship in honor of Dr. Allan Rosenfield, former dean of the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. The students selected as ASPPH/CDC Allan Rosenfield Global Health Fellows are expected to involve themselves, as Dr. Rosenfield did throughout his career, in all aspects of global public health. The fellowship is a unique training opportunity to learn from leading CDC experts in CDC headquarters in Atlanta, GA, as well as various international posts.
The purpose of the fellowship program is to enhance the practice-based training of graduates from ASPPH members who have a keen interest in global public health. Fellowship assignments will emphasize a variety of training areas such as global surveillance, monitoring and evaluation, epidemiology, strategic information and program management, thereby accelerating the fellows’ careers as future leaders in global public health. Currently, ASPPH sponsors 48 ASPPH/CDC Allan Rosenfield Global Health Fellows assigned to various CDC offices worldwide.
“I have had a unique chance to work with the very first cohort of the newly implemented Field Epidemiology Training Program in Zambia—a public health workforce capacity building program,” said Ms. Ramya Kumar, an ASPPH/CDC Allan Rosenfield Global Health Fellow based in Zambia and focusing on epidemiology. “I have had so many opportunities to be involved in practical public health work such as: collaborating with Zambian government and local university officials, participating in outbreak investigations, developing new skills with EpiInfo and GIS, and writing manuscripts for publication with a team of scientists. The breadth and depth of projects available at CDC Zambia is very impressive, and I am grateful for the excellent mentorship I’ve received from several highly capable, dedicated leaders in global public in health.”
ASPPH is now accepting applications to fill multiple global health fellowship positions at CDC. Fellowship positions are full-time opportunities for a period of 12 months and will begin in September 2015. The fellowship features an intensive orientation arranged by ASPPH in consultation with CDC. The orientation will be held in Atlanta, GA prior to the start of the assignments, which is expected to occur in September. To qualify for this fellowship, candidates must have received their masters or doctorate degree from an ASPPH-member CEPH-accredited school or program of public health prior to the beginning of the fellowship (no later than August 2015) or within the previous five years (no earlier than May 2010) and also be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (Green Card). Preference will be given to candidates with a Certification in Public Health (CPH).

RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS IN SOUTH AFRICA
The Health Economics and Epidemiology Research Office (HE²RO) in Johannesburg, South Africa has openings for 12-month Quantcorps Research Fellows. HE²RO is CGHD’s partner in South Africa. It conducts applied research and evaluation on HIV, TB, and noncommunicable diseases in South Africa and generates evidence-based information for the South African government and other stakeholders. Quantcorps Fellows serve as all-purpose research assistants and study coordinators for the senior scientists at HE²RO, gaining hands-on experience in field-based public health research. Strong quantitative skills in epidemiology and/or health economics are required. For further information, please see the attached flier. The Global Health Fellows Program (GHFP-II) is a five year cooperative agreement implemented and managed by the Public Health Institute in partnership with Global Health Corps, GlobeMed, Management Systems International and PYXERA Global. GHFP-II is supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
GHFP-II's goal is to improve the effectiveness of USAID health programs by addressing the Agency's immediate and emerging human capacity needs. The program seeks to accomplish this goal first through the recruitment, placement and support of diverse health professionals at the junior, mid and senior levels. These program participants include fellows, interns, corporate volunteers and Foreign Service National professionals. The program then provides substantial performance management and career development support to participants, including annual working planning assistance, and ensures that professional development opportunities are available.
Looking to the future, GHFP-II also seeks to establish a pool of highly-qualified global health professionals that will ensure the Agency's ongoing technical leadership and effectiveness. This objective is supported by an extensive outreach program that brings global health opportunities and specialized career advice to a diverse range of interested individuals, with a particular focus on those underrepresented in the field of global health.
INTRODUCTION:
USAID advances and supports rights based voluntary family planning and reproductive health programs in more than 45 countries across the globe. As the largest bilateral donor, USAID's work in family planning is highly visible throughout the United States Government (USG) and international community. USAID's public affairs and communications efforts are, therefore, a critical component of USAID's involvement. They inform internal and external audiences - including key decision makers like the U.S. Congress - about USAID's objectives and progress.
The Population and Reproductive Health Communications Intern will be assigned to the Front Office of the Office of Population and Reproductive Health (PRH). The PRH Office provides technical leadership, strategic direction, implementation oversight and support to field missions, as well as partner coordination and performance tracking for the family planning component of the USG's Global Health Initiative. The Intern will coordinate with technical teams across the office and draft success stories, fact sheets, and blog posts related to USAID's family planning programs. These documents will be featured on www.usaid.gov and used for external events. The Intern will also have the opportunity to craft content and strategize new ideas for engaging audiences on USAID's social media channels. This position receives day to day guidance from the Senior Technical Advisor for External Affairs as well as the Communications Advisor as his/her onsite manager.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
• Gaining a greater understanding of how to communicate successes in family planning and reproductive health programs.
• Gaining experience in communicating technical terms and ideas in easily understandable language.
• Gaining a better understanding on writing for different forms of print and online communications.
• Deepening skills in collaboration and coordination within a complex organizational and implementation structure.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Working with USAID technical teams and partner organizations to gather materials and write success stories and fact sheets.
• Organizing visual elements (photos, b-roll) for use on social media and future projects.
• Assisting in documenting, organizing, and managing knowledge/content generated.
• Working with key USAID staff to review content.
• Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational and programming need and/or the Intern's own interests.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Currently enrolled senior in a bachelor's degree program; or, completion of such a program within the past 24 months.
• Demonstrated experience working in communications and/or global health programs is preferred.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Programs and managing social media channels (Twitter, Facebook).
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to travel internationally.
• US citizenship or US permanent residency required.
COMPENSATION:
$15.52 per hour (non-exempt, hourly wage position)
