"Bringing Climate Science to Public Health: Population-based Applications for Disaster Preparedness"
November 2, 2012
Time: 12pm-1pm
Location: Room L-210
BU Medical School Instructional Building
Speaker: P. Gregg Greenough, MD, MPH

Climatology and the atmospheric sciences have advanced our understanding of current and future climate effects through modeling and analog techniques. In this seminar, Dr. Greenough will discuss the cognitive disconnect between the sophisticated modeling of climate change, extreme weather events and the ability to translate these to populations at risk, especially those that are rapidly urbanizing in harm’s way. This session will highlight the interaction that needs to happen between the climatic sciences and the population-based methods of epidemiology and demography, using tools such as geospatial analysis and mapping, for translation into local and regional preparedness and response.

The IH Department is hosting an exciting event. Spots are very limited, so RSVP quickly!
Professor Gill was approached by a group of computer scientists at MIT's Lincoln Labs who received a grant to create an outbreak simulation. It works as a game involving 4-5 teams working in parallel. You get data, you respond, the simulation models the impact of your response, you make more decisions, cycle repeats, and millions live or die based on your decisions. The game is being hosted Thursday Nov 1 from 12:30-4:30 in CT305. We are creating 4-5 teams, and these would be a mixture of individuals from the school of medicine, IH, Epi, and biostats as well as some faculty. You must be able to commit to the full four hours.
We have 4 spots open for IH students. To participate, e-mail Lindsey Kinsinger, at lkins@bu.edu, by Friday, October 26 at 5pm.

Today’s Environmental Health Seminar: Occupational Heat-Related Illness with Kathleen Fitzsimmons, Epidemiologist. Will be of interest to students with international interests as well!
Environmental Health Seminar
Title: Occupational Heat-Related Illness
Speaker: Kathleen Fitzsimmons, MPH
Epidemiologist, Massachusetts Department of Public Health
Time: Friday, October 12, 2012, 12:00PM - 1:00PM
Place: Boston University Instructional Building Room L214
Contact: jvsevent@bu.edu
Summary: Continuing the Department of Environmental Health’s seminar series, Climate Change: Science, Health, and Policy, Kathleen Fitzsimmons, MPH, will present this week’s seminar titled, Occupational Heat-Related Illness. Workers represent a distinct population at risk for heat-related illness (HRI), considered to be a leading occupational health effect of global climate change. Environmental heat is a potential hazard in a number of industries, including agriculture, yet there is a lack of information on the extent of HRI among US workers. Ms. Fitzsimmons will provide an overview of occupational HRI, summarize California's outdoor workplace HRI prevention regulation, and describe a pilot surveillance project conducted by the California Department of Public Health to assess the statewide burden of occupational HRI.
Dr. Robert Harrison will be joining the seminar online to take part in the discussion. Dr. Harrison founded and directed the University of California San Francisco Occupational Health Services for more than 15 years, and now is a senior attending physician. He also directs the worker tracking investigation program for the California Department of Public Health.
