New Class Available- Global Health 811: Applied Research Methods

GH811 is a recently developed course focused on data science methods for global health. The class is hands-on and will equip students with practical skills that employers are looking for. This course is open to all students who’ve taken both introductory biostatistics and epidemiology (EP713 and BS704).

Course Overview
In this course we focus on building skills in data, tools and methods for carrying out global health research. The class will introduce you to all stages of the research pipeline, from asking interesting questions to conducting a literature review, data collection, analysis, crafting an effective research paper and communicating results.

House- and Pet-Sitter Wanted

A DGH professor who lives in Jamaica Plain is looking for someone to stay at her house while she travels and take care of her dogs and cat.  It is a single-family house with a yard and garden, 10 minutes’ walk from Forest Hills Station on the Orange Line.  There are two dogs (an older husky and a younger border collie/lab mix) and one moderately elderly cat.  All are extremely friendly.  Responsibilities include daily animal care (food, walks for the dogs, cleanup, providing a lap for the cat) and minimal house upkeep (bringing in the mail, etc.).  Experience caring for dogs required.  $35/day.  Dates currently needed are November 24-December 10 and December 25-January 5. 2016 Mandela Washington Fellowship – a great opportunity for African students

The application for the 2016 Mandela Washington Fellowship is open now through November 11. The program will bring 1,000 young Africans ages 25-35 to the U.S. next summer for six weeks of leadership training at U.S. universities. The U.S.-based portion of the program culminates with a summit here in D.C. attended by President Obama. After the academic program and summit, Fellows are able to access opportunities such as professional internship experiences in the U.S. and Africa, mentoring, travel grants to speak at conferences, and regional networking events. The attached flyers and this video provide more information.

Additionally, applications are currently open for training at our YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa, located at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya. YALI RLCs provide leadership training and networking opportunities, similar to the Fellowship, but at a regional level, and are open to participants ages 18-35. The RLC East Africa accepts applicants from 14 Central and East African countries. You can find more information about the program and eligibility at yalieastafrica.org.

Looking for innovative ways to engage in Global Health? Interested in working with a diverse team of students from the BU Schools of Public Health, Medicine, Engineering, Law, and Business?

The BU Team application for the 2016 International Emory Global Health Case Competition is now open!

This prestigious competition brings together interdisciplinary teams of students from universities around the world to learn about, develop, and recommend innovative solutions for a real world global health problem. It is an excellent opportunity to learn from and collaborate with colleagues across disciplines and develop skills to solve global health issues effectively.

We are looking for students interested in global health to join BU's team at the 2016 International Emory Global Health Case Competition. We aim to field a strong team this year, as last year's team brought home the Innovation Award for their strategy to reduce gun violence in Honduras.

The competition will take place at Emory University in Atlanta on April 8th-9th, 2016. Registration and travel costs will be covered by BU.

CAHMI is seeking a full-time Technical Research Assistant

CAHMI is seeking a full-time Technical Research Assistant. The Technical Research Assistant will participate in development, management, and maintenance of multiple websites designed to disseminate and present survey data and user-generated reports. They will assist with management of data on the CAHMI’s main websites through multiple databases and routinely prepare data for reports and displays. They will also visualize how to set-up 879 complex SQL querying features and back-end databases to support new data projects. The ideal candidate is passionate about public health data, has a desire to learn and grow in the field of displaying and translating this information, and has an interest in health information technology.

Key tasks include: SQL database management, report generation for CAHMI research projects, website design coordination, statistical analysis, project management, and other research activities as needed.

Although this position requires a Bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent, we highly prefer a candidate with a Master’s degree. A minimum of 3 years related work experience is also required. We also prefer candidates with experience designing and conducting online surveys or presenting data through dynamic web-based media. ASP.NET experience is also desirable, as is experience with designing and managing websites.

$5000 International Reporting Fellowship with the Pulitzer Center.

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting—a collaboration between BU’s School of Public Health, Center for Global Health and Development and College of Communication—has hosted Student Fellows from Boston University since 2011. Students have reported from Nepal, Haiti, Mali, Zanzibar, Myanmar, Turkey, Uganda, Malawi and this winter from Cuba. The fellowships are a centerpiece of BU’s Program on Crisis Response and Reporting, which examines the intersection of journalism and public health at times of crisis.
