Important Dates & Information from the SPH Registrar’s Office

Monday, October 6 is the last day to drop a full semester class without penalty.  Half-semester classes have customized drop dates. Not sure of the impact? Please ask us if you have any questions about dropping classes.

  • Monday, October 13: Columbus Day Holiday, no classes
  • Tuesday October 14: Follow a Monday schedule of classes; no Tuesday classes held.
  • Tuesday, October 21: Spring 2015 Course Fair, Hiebert Lounge, 4:30-6:30 PM
  • Sunday, October 26: Spring 2015 Registration Begins at 9:00 AM for all graduate students.

The spring schedule and planner are open and viewable on the Student Link.  A PDF of the SPH schedule and registration packet will be released on or about October 6.

AYUDA (American Youth Understanding Diabetes Abroad) is a citizen sector non-profit operating out of Washington DC that empowers youth to be agents of change in diabetes communities around the world. AYUDA partners with local diabetes organizations in Latin America to support sustainable diabetes outreach programs with the goal of empowering youth to live happier and healthier lives with diabetes. AYUDA volunteers undergo a rigorous training program before traveling abroad that gives volunteers the knowledge to work effectively in the local context. During the in-country program, volunteers work closely with AYUDA's local partner organizations to support and strengthen the sustainability of their various diabetes outreach initiatives. AYUDA programs for this coming year are as follows:

  • Haitian Camp Ami: April 4-14th
  • Ganémosle 5k/10k/Zumbathon: May 30th-June 8th
  • Campo Amigo: June 20th-July 8th.

The mission of the International Vaccine Access Center (IVAC) at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is to accelerate global access to life-saving vaccines through the development and implementation of evidence-based policies. About the position-Scientific Communications and Policy Officer:

The Scientific Communications & Policy Officer will work within the Policy, Advocacy & Communications (PA&C) team as a non-tenured faculty member of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The PA&C team conducts a variety of strategic communications and advocacy activities and works closely across IVAC’s program areas – including Epidemiology, Economics & Finance, monitoring & evaluation and policy – to develop targeted strategies and evidence-based materials aimed at informing vaccine decision-making throughout the developing world and among key stakeholder groups such as the technical/scientific community, global health funders, policy-makers and partners.

Global Legal Program 2015 Summer Internship

Center Background: The Center for Reproductive Rights is a non-profit legal advocacy organization dedicated to advancing reproductive freedom as a fundamental right that all governments are legally obligated to protect, respect, and fulfill. The Center engages in cutting-edge impact litigation, policy analysis, advocacy, research, and public education throughout the world, to achieve women's equality in society and to ensure that all women have access to appropriate and freely chosen reproductive health services.Internship Summary: The Center's Global Legal Program (GLP) collaborates with women's rights organizations and advocates around the world to promote and defend internationally-recognized reproductive rights through a range of legal strategies and global initiatives. The Center works in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America and the Caribbean, has a Global Advocacy program that leads its advocacy work before the United Nations and in other international fora, and has regional offices in Bogotá, Kathmandu and Nairobi, and soon in Geneva. Our activities include litigation to enforce reproductive rights norms in national, regional and international fora; developing advocacy tools and training materials to build the capacity and support the work of reproductive rights lawyers worldwide; monitoring and documenting violations of reproductive rights; and analyzing legal and policy developments relating to reproductive rights.

We seek to hire four skilled and highly-motivated legal interns in our New York office to help us pursue our mission of advancing women's fundamental human rights this summer. The internship is full-time and ten weeks long'from June to August. Applicants are encouraged to obtain funding from law schools or other sources. This internship is eligible for a small stipend if outside funding cannot be obtained.

Our New York summer program also includes opportunities for lunches with experts in the field, social events, networking opportunities with other organizations, and other activities.

Responsibilities:

As an intern with GLP's New York office, your primary job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist members of our legal team with researching and writing reproductive rights-related submissions to United Nations and regional human rights bodies.
  • Conduct other general legal and policy research on international law, human rights law, and foreign and comparative law relating to reproductive rights.
  • Prepare materials for advocacy in regional and international fora.

Qualifications:

  • Strong legal research and writing skills.
  • Demonstrated interest in gender or reproductive rights.
  • 2Ls, 3Ls and LL.M. students with prior knowledge of human rights law are strongly encouraged to apply.

Development Internship at Massachusetts Alliance on Teen Pregnancy

Founded in 1979, the Massachusetts Alliance on Teen Pregnancy builds the capacity of youth-serving providers and engages youth in public policy advocacy to ensure reproductive justice for all youth and young parents in an environment of dignity, respect, and high expectations. We believe that youth gaining control of their sexual health are youth gaining control of their lives, and that young people who do become parents can rise to the challenge.

The Alliance seeks an intern to assist with fundraising during the 2014-2015 school year. This is an outstanding opportunity for individuals who have an interest in adolescent sexual health and young families and are seeking experience in nonprofit fundraising. Working closely with senior level staff, the Development Intern will develop skills in federal, private foundation, and individual fundraising while gaining first-hand experience in a small but growing nonprofit.

Responsibilities Will Include:

Database management;
Compiling and summarizing data on programmatic achievements;
Implementing an annual appeal to individual donors (mail and online);
Drafting and sending donor acknowledgement letters;
Assisting with federal and foundation proposal and report writing; and
Soliciting sponsors for major events.

Position Requirements:

Resourceful and thorough;
Strong organizational skills;
Excellent, professional phone manner;
Excellent written communication skills;
Strong computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office package (Outlook, Excel, Word);
Willingness and ability to work autonomously, with direction and support;
Commitment to and belief in the mission of the Massachusetts Alliance on Teen Pregnancy, and desire to empower the young people of Massachusetts; and Engagement in an undergraduate or graduate level of study preferred.
