Global Health Corps Program Associate Job

October 9th, 2013 in Jobs

Program Associate Job Description

Global Health Corps
The extreme disparity in health outcomes and access to healthcare that exists today between the world’s rich and the world’s poor is unjust and unsustainable. To change this unacceptable status quo will require a new generation of leaders with diverse skills and backgrounds. Emerging leaders need opportunities to build their skills and build meaningful connections with other young leaders who share a vision for transformative change.

Global Health Corps is mobilizing a global community of emerging leaders to build the movement for health equity. We do this by:

•       Increasing the impact of great organizations today: Fellows work with high-impact organizations in year-long paid positions. During their fellowship year, fellows make a significant and measurable contribution to the partner organization and the target population.

•       Training and supporting the leaders of tomorrow: Over the course of the fellowship year, fellows participate in a wide range of activities aimed at increasing their effectiveness as practitioners and their development as leaders.

•       Building a global community of change-makers: Fellows build a set of shared values, commitment and skills that they carry well beyond the fellowship year. The GHC community and alumni program serve as a source of opportunity and strength throughout fellows’ lives and careers.

Fellows work in teams of 2—one international fellow, one in-country fellow—in a wide range of areas to support our partners in improving healthcare access and health outcomes for the poor. Fellows have built financial management systems for grassroots HIV organizations in Uganda, counseled homeless teenagers in New Jersey, supported district pharmacies in Rwanda in rolling out new supply chain management tools, and conducted policy research in Washington DC.

The Candidate

The Global Health Corps is seeking a well-organized, hard-working Program Associate to join our small, entrepreneurial team in November 2013. The ideal candidate will thrive in an informal, fast-paced, start-up environment and will be excited to support, strengthen and build out fellow and alumni programming at GHC. The ideal candidate will:

-Be an innovator – able to design systems and think outside the box

-Enjoy solving problems

-Be a self-starter

-Enjoy working collaboratively in a team

-Demonstrate excellent attention to detail

The Work

The Program Associate will report to the Vice President of Programs and fill a pivotal role in a small, dynamic team that is spread across six countries. Because the team is small and innovative thinking is valued, there will be many opportunities to grow and experiment. The role includes supporting the range of program activities, such as the Placement Organization selection process, GHC’s Advising Program, Alumni events and  the various US and Africa-based workshops and retreats, including the two-week training for incoming fellows at Yale University. This role will provide many opportunities to connect and liaise with leading health organizations in Africa and the US and support a wide network of emerging leaders from around the world. This is the perfect role for someone who wants to understand how a small nonprofit operates and is excited to dive in and gain experience managing a range of functions. Specific responsibilities include:

-Assist with preparations for fellow workshops and retreats throughout the year, including Training Institute at Yale University
-Track partnership application process for renewing and new placement organizations
-Support GHC’s Advising Program and identify strategies to cultivate advisor and fellow relationships
-Research leadership development approaches and learnings that can inform GHC’s programming
-Assist with alumni planning and coordination of events and activities
-Support and liaise with Program Managers in all GHC countries, including Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia, Malawi and the US
-Update and maintain all program-related materials
-Support a range of other program activities as needed throughout the year

Skills/Experience

-Great organizational skills and top-notch attention to details
-Experience working in cross-cultural communities
-Ability to communicate and interact professionally with a variety of stakeholders, both in person and written
-Skilled in using Excel and ability to design presentations in Powerpoint
-Tech savviness and interest in new technologies; ability to use Google tools and other online platforms to streamline work
-Passion for global health, social justice and service programs
-Previous experience in nonprofit settings a plus

How to Apply

To apply, please submit resume and cover letter to apply@ghcorps.org. Please indicate Program Associate in the email subject. Feel free to submit any other writing or work sample that will help us get to know you better.

BMC Administrative Fellowship Program-Applications due 12/1

October 9th, 2013 in Fellowships

Seeing the Future for Safety Net Hospitals, from Interim Chair Professor Rich Feeley:

Applications are open for the Administrative Fellowship at BMC described below.  An IH graduate, Kristen Apa, is one of the current fellowship holders.  She reports that the job is both challenging and fascinating.  BMC faces major strategic decisions as it navigates the transition to a system where most people have health insurance, but undocumented and recent immigrants do not.  These individuals use safety net hospitals which face a much more restrictive environment for the recovery of uncompensated care costs.  This problem will become acute for all US urban safety net hospitals if Obamacare survives, and the way the problems are resolved will greatly affect the health care available to immigrant communities.  If you want to be at the center of this developing policy issue, consider applying for the BMC Administrative Fellowship.  I particularly urge those who have done well in health systems and financial management courses to consider applying.

Boston Medical Center Administrative Fellowship Program

The BMC Administrative Fellowship is a one-year administrative program which provides exceptional health care management and leadership training to individuals at New England’s largest safety net hospital. Fellows will be able to engage in the complexities and functions of a large academic and community-based medical center, while working in state-of-the-art clinical facilities and having unsurpassed exposure to a large, diverse patient population.

Through project-based learning guided by members of the BMC executive team, fellows have the distinctive opportunity to become qualified in areas such as corporate structure, capital finance, operations and system-wide strategic planning. Due to the flexible format of BMC’s Administrative Fellowship, fellows focus on a variety of assignments tailored to their background and further define their areas of interest. Fellows will collaborate with senior health care executives, as well as lead their own special projects and initiatives. Fellows expand their skills as they build a meaningful career – one that will impact the way in which modern health care is delivered.

Opportunities and Benefits of the BMC Administrative Fellowship:

  • Advanced experience directed towards preparing fellows for administrative leadership positions in academic medical institutions
  • Develop an understanding of BMC organizational structure and the interrelation between departments and personnel, as well as the affiliation with Boston University School of Medicine
  • Obtain an applied foundation in one of the following: financial management, ambulatory care management, research administration, human resources administration, facilities, and strategic planning
  • Gain an awareness of rewards and challenges of providing the highest quality, patient-focused care to a patient population of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Establish a performance record through project work and departmental staff responsibilities

Eligibility

BMC is seeking individuals motivated by a strong sense of social responsibility and interest in fostering our unique mission of providing exceptional care, without exception.

Applicants must have a Master's Degree in Hospital Administration, Business Administration, Public Health, Health Services Administration, Nursing Administration or a closely related field from an accredited institution. Candidates should be team players, excellent communicators and knowledgeable of past and current health industry perspectives.

BMC is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. Boston University graduates, women and minority candidates are encouraged to apply.

About Boston Medical Center

Located in Boston´s historic South End neighborhood, BMC is a private, not-for-profit, 496-bed, academic medical center and the primary teaching affiliate for Boston University School of Medicine. Consistent with its mission to provide the best in health care to all, BMC is the largest safety net hospital in New England and reaches into the community as a founding partner of Boston HealthNet, a network of 15 community health centers through Boston serving more than a quarter million people annually.

As a central component of the greater Boston area, our commitment to serving individuals with various cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds is an essential part of who we are at BMC. Approximately 70% percent of BMC‘s patients come from underserved populations, including low-income families, elders, people with disabilities and immigrants, and 30% do not speak English as a primary language. By bringing together differences — a rich variety of traditions and viewpoints — we can remain truly engaged in providing the utmost service to our community.

Launching a new Model: Challenges and Successes
Addressing the ongoing crises of female and child security in Addis Ababa, The Global Family Initiative's
Betasab project forms families from vulnerable Ethiopian women and children, and provides them with a holistic package of support: education, nutrition, healthcare, housing. When this new model launched in May 2012, there was little research or data to support its efficacy. Join us for a discussion of how Betasab, with the help of a BUSPH student, undertook this challenge.
