Rio de Janeiro Intensive Portuguese Language Program (Summer)

In this six-week, eight-credit program, students complete the equivalent of one year of Portuguese language at the intermediate level in Rio, known as the cidade maravilhosa: the marvelous city. Excursions to sites within the city complement the classroom learning and allow students to discover this spectacular city and its world-renowned beauty. Classes are held at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica (PUC-Rio), in one of Rio’s loveliest neighborhoods. Students immerse themselves in Portuguese language and Brazilian culture in the colorful cultural center of Rio de Janeiro. Take advantage of this amazing opportunity to study Brazilian and South American culture in a globally important cultural capital.

Course Details

Each course carries four credits. Students must enroll for a total of eight credits.

  • CAS LP 211: Third-Semester Portuguese
  • CAS LP 212: Fourth-Semester Portuguese

Program Details

  • Completion of two semesters of college-level portuguese or the equivalent, or placement test results
  • Admissions requirements for all programs
Program Dates
  • Summer Term: Late June to early August
  • Upon successful completion of the program, students earn eight Boston University credits.
  • Housing is provided at Bonita, centrally located in the heart of Ipanema. Students have access to shared kitchens, bathrooms, and common areas, including terraces. The residence is equipped with wireless internet and 24-hour security and is within walking distance of some of Rio’s best restaurants, shops, and beaches.

Program Faculty

The Boston University Rio de Janeiro program is administered by staff at Boston University. A program manager oversees admissions and pre-departure procedures, and maintains contact with students prior to their arrival in Rio de Janeiro. The Boston office also houses administrative personnel who are responsible for everyday operations.
