At Any Price? Negotiating Access to Crisis Zones

 Wednesday, February 1st

 7pm (Refreshments served at 6pm)

 Boston Public Library
Rabb Lecture Hall
700 Boylston Street
Boston, MA

While humanitarian aid organizations and human rights groups often work in the same crisis situations, they have different approaches for reaching their respective goals. Both approaches, however, require negotiations with a variety of actors and armed groups, government authorities, community leaders, and civil society groups, each with their own vested interests – and sometimes the price of action may compromise basic principles.

Join panelists from Doctors Without Borders, Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), Tufts University's Feinstein International Center, and the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative for a discussion of these questions and dilemmas: How different are the humanitarian and human rights approaches? Are they compatible on the ground? How are decisions made about starting projects in complex environments? Who is being served by our actions and how do we listen to their voices? What are the costs of speaking out or remaining silent? What compromises are acceptable?
