Key offices supporting faculty research

The Office of Research represents the University to key stakeholders in government, industry, and foundations, leading the development and implementation of effective policies and procedures to streamline and manage research.

Sponsored Programs is responsible for ensuring that all research proposals and awards adhere to BU’s policies and meet obligations to external sponsors.  While Foundation Relations should be contacted before a foundation is solicited, Sponsored Program must be contacted, and its processes followed, when a BU investigator is submitting a proposal, regardless of the funder.  Additional information for Sponsored Programs can be found on the Office of Research website.

Federal Relations connects faculty with federal funding opportunities, shares Boston University’s expertise with policymakers in Washington, D.C., and works with national educational and scientific organizations.

Industry Engagement helps BU researchers collaborate with industry by offering individualized consultation and assistance to form partnerships that help develop and move innovations from the lab to become products, services, or businesses to benefit society.

For investigators at the medical school, Proposal Development provides a wide range of support, including budget creation, sub-grant setup, interpreting funder guidelines, and securing Sponsored Programs’ approval to submit applications, as well as guiding junior and ESL faculty on developing and writing their scientific narratives.

Per the request of the foundation’s leadership or the university’s, these foundations should only be approached through or with clearance from Foundation Relations.
