This is a hands-on course. This is not an introductory course.
Prerequisites: This is not an introductory course. Participants must have some experience working as a Dental Assistant and/or must be familiar with dental radiology-related terminology.

Overview:
This course teaches the essential concepts of dental radiology for dental assistants. This course has a lecture session and a half-day or full day clinical component. Participants will learn the intra-oral and extra-oral techniques and safeguards of dental radiology.
Course Objectives:
- Characteristics and qualities of the X-ray tube and the beam
- Production and properties of X-rays
- Radiation biology and protection
- Infection Control protocols
- Selection of the radiographic techniques
- Film and sensor placement (Paralleling and bisecting the angle technique)
- Film processing, mounting and duplication
- Characteristics and evaluation of dental radiographs including panoramic radiographs
- Quality assurance and recognizing and correcting errors for both film and digital images

Additional Information:
In the four-hour MA clinic session, participants will take a written exam, and take satisfactory periapical and bitewings using digital sensors on a manikin. They will become familiar with processing and mounting of films and self-analyze radiographic technical and processing errors.
In the full day NH clinic session, participants will take a written exam, and will have additional training on sensor and film placement and exposure.
This course meets the requirements of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Board of Dentistry. The full day clinic, Clinic E, course also meets the requirements for the state of New Hampshire.
Lunch will be provided on the day of the lecture. Parking is available at 710 Albany Street, Boston MA 02118 and will not be covered for the course.
Participants must be 18+ years of age.
