Instructor: Kathy Eklund, RDH, MPH

Kathy Eklund is the Director of Occupational Health and Safety, and the Forsyth Research Subject & Patient Safety Advocate at The Forsyth Institute. She is adjunct faculty at Regis College, Dental Hygiene Program where she teaches a senior level course.  Evidence-Based Decision Making. Ms. Eklund is the 2017-2019 Chair of the Organization for Safety Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP) Board of Directors and a consultant the American Dental Association (ADA) Council on Dental Practice.   Over the past 35 years, Ms. Eklund has published papers and contributed to several texts on infection control and safety. She is an author of the CDC Guidelines for Infection Control in Dental Health-Care Settings- 2003.  Ms. Eklund has lectured nationally and internationally on these topics.

Course Description:

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed dental healthcare delivery.  This course will review the current interim infection prevention and control guidelines.  Strategies and resources for implementing current guidance will be described. Considerations for post-pandemic infection prevention & control will be discussed.

Upon completion of this webinar participants will:

• Describe interim infection prevention & control guidance for dentistry.
• Identify strategies and resources for implementation & evaluation
• Discuss implications for dental infection prevention & control, post COVID-19.

Infection Prevention & Control in Dentistry – Instrument Processing and Sterility Assurance

Many aspects of infection prevention & control have been modified during the COVID-19 pandemic. There is currently no specific COVID-19 interim guidance for instrument processing and sterility assurance.  However, there are considerations for the management of central sterilization and personnel working in the area.

This course will review the basics of sterility assurance for safe care and personnel management considerations to ensure social distancing, recommended PPE, and safe work practices.

Upon completion of this webinar participants will:

1. Describe the basic processes in a sterility assurance program
2. Identify strategies to ensure the safety of personnel performing instrument processing
