GSDM volunteers partner with local schools to screen 88 athletes during 2024 Special Olympics Massachusetts Summer Games
On Saturday, June 8, 60 volunteers from the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM), Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, and Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences provided oral healthcare services to athletes participating in the 2024 Special Olympics Massachusetts Summer Games as part of the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes® Special Smiles program. Joseph Johnson is GSDM’s assistant director of director of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belong—a position he has had since January 2023. In this role, he pulls from skills developed from both his athletic coaching and social work experiences to provide support to initiatives created Larry Dunham DMD 83, assistant dean for diversity, equity, Inclusion, & belonging, and develop new programming, such as the Pre-Matriculation Enrichment Program and climate surveys. GSDM Student-Driven Project Targets Educating Underrepresented High School Students about Various Dental Professions
Dr. Michelle Henshaw SPH 96 DPH 07, GSDM associate dean of global & population health, said high school students from diverse backgrounds need more exposure to various dental career opportunities before they need to plan their educational paths. Since 2020, Henshaw has been working with oral healthcare students to develop an online presentation aimed at high school student populations that are historically underrepresented in the dental profession. GSDM Professor Testifies in Support of Rare Genetic Craniofacial Disease Insurance Coverage
As of 2023, Dr. Yoshiyuki Mochida, GSDM clinical professor of molecular & cell biology, has testified at public hearings five times—both in person and via written testimony-- in support of Massachusetts legislation that would guarantee insurance coverage for Massachusetts residents with rare genetic craniofacial conditions.
