Sammy Noumbissi DDS, MS, AFAAID

Dr. Noumbissi earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Howard University College of Dentistry in Washington, DC. He pursued advanced training in implant dentistry through the three-year Graduate Program in Implant Dentistry at Loma Linda University, California, where he was awarded a Certificate in Implant Dentistry and a Master of Science degree in Implant Surgery.

He is the author of multiple book chapters and has published more than sixty scientific and clinical articles in the field of dental implantology, with a particular focus on ceramic implants. In 2009, he became one of the first clinicians in North America to introduce and implement ceramic implant therapy in private practice. Alongside his clinical work, he has remained actively engaged in academia and research, conducting numerous studies on the biological and physiological impact of implant materials on patients.

He currently serves as a Visiting Professor at the University of Milan, an Adjunct Professor at the University of Chieti–Pescara, and a Visiting Researcher in the Department of Ceramic Materials at INSA Lyon, France. In 2011, Dr. Noumbissi founded the International Academy of Ceramic Implantology, which he continues to lead, promoting advanced implant education with a strong emphasis on the biological and material sciences underlying implant dentistry. He is a member and Associate Fellow at the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and his expertise is widely sought by clinicians, researchers, and implant manufacturers. Dr. Noumbissi maintains a private practice near Washington DC in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Overview

Ceramic dental implants have been utilized clinically for over four decades, though early designs were constrained by the material limitations of first-generation ceramics. Over the past two decades, significant advances in material science and manufacturing have established zirconia as the preferred load-bearing ceramic for dental implants and prosthetic components. Modern zirconia composites such as Yttria-Stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia (Y-TZP) and Alumina-Toughened Zirconia (ATZ) exhibit superior mechanical strength, optical properties, and biocompatibility, making them viable alternatives to traditional titanium systems.

Despite these developments, the understanding and clinical integration of ceramic implants remain limited within mainstream implant dentistry, even as patient demand and manufacturer adoption continue to rise. This presentation aims to clarify the scientific foundations, clinical indications, and treatment workflows associated with contemporary zirconia implant systems. Long-term clinical outcomes and case examples across varying levels of complexity will be discussed to demonstrate the predictability and versatility of ceramic implants.
