Administrative Re-structuring at GSDM

KilgoreLeone-200Effective January 1, 2013, Dr. Thomas Kilgore stepped down as Associate Dean for Advanced Education and International Programs as he reduces his time at the School in order to increase his teaching responsibilities. As Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Dr. Cataldo Leone assumed the added responsibility of overseeing the School’s Post-doctoral programs. In addition, the Office of the Registrar now reports to the Office of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

The scope of  Dr. Leone’s new responsibilities include oversight for the School’s Post-doctoral  programs that comprises the Advanced Specialty Education Programs in Dental Public Health, Endodontics, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, along with the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program. He is also now responsible for the management and curriculum content of the GSDM Post-graduate programs. He will continue to provide oversight and management of the curriculum content for the Pre-doctoral (DMD) Dental Education program. Dr. Leone has served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs since 2008.

In addition to his administrative duties, Dr. Leone holds the position of Professor of Periodontology and Oral Biology at GSDM. He was awarded a DMD from the University of Pittsburgh in 1983; a Certificate in Periodontology from Harvard University School of Dental Medicine in 1987; and a DSc in Medical Sciences in Oral Biology/Biochemistry from Harvard University in 1989.

Prior to joining GSDM in 1999, Dr. Leone held numerous positions at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine including Associate Professor of Periodontology; Director of Post-doctoral Periodontology; Chair ad interim, Department of Periodontology; Director of Graduate Studies ad interim; and Faculty Advisor, Robert R. Andrews Pre-doctoral Research Honors Society. Prior to that he was Assistant Professor of Periodontology at the University of Florida College of Dentistry, Gainesville.

Dr. Leone is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and has been honored as Clinician of the Year at the Boston University Dental Health Center. Most recently, he received the Spencer N. Frankl Excellence in Teaching Award at the 2012 GSDM graduation convocation.

Dr. Leone has an impressive track record of leadership here at GSDM, on the Medical Campus, and at the University level: Co-Chair of the Pre-doctoral Student Research Committee; Co-Chair of the Task Force on Restructuring the Restorative Sciences Curriculum; Chair of the Subcommittee of Biomedical Sciences Course Directors; and the Chair of the Curriculum Management Team.

Dr. Leone also serves as a member of the Institutional Review Board for Human Research (IRB), Panel Green, BUMC/BMC; a member of the Committee on Faculty Affairs, BUMC; as a GSDM representative on the Faculty Council, Boston University; a member of the Group on Educational Resources, BUMC; a member of the Instructional Space Planning Task Force, BUMC; and a member of the GSDM Applied Strategic Planning Committee.

Dr. Leone is also a proud member of numerous professional organizations including the Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity; the Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) Dental Honor Society, ß Chapter-University of Pittsburgh; the American Dental Association (ADA); the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology (ADSA); the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP); American and International Associations for Dental Research (AADR/IADR); the Periodontal Research Group of the American Association for Dental Research; the Craniofacial Biology Group of the American Association for Dental Research; the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB); the Federation of American Societies of Experimental Biology (FASEB); the American Board of Periodontology (ABP);  the American  Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS); and the American Dental Education Association (ADEA).

Dr. Kilgore will continue to serve GSDM as Professor of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, teaching two days per week. He will also continue to practice Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery one day per week at the Boston University Dental Health Center, 930 Commonwealth Avenue.

Dr. Kilgore received his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1969. From 1969–73, he completed his internship and residency program at Massachusetts General Hospital in Oral Surgery. He was awarded a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery from Harvard University in 1973.

Dr. Kilgore joined Boston University School of Dental Medicine as a Clinical Instructor in Oral Surgery in 1973. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1977 and assumed his current professorship in 1984. From 1983–90, Dr. Kilgore distinguished himself as Assistant Dean for Curriculum. He subsequently served as Assistant Dean for Pre-doctoral Programs (1990–91), Associate Dean for Pre-doctoral Programs (1991–93), Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (1993–98), Associate Dean for Advanced Education (1998–07), and in 2007 he was appointed Associate Dean for Advanced Education and International Programs. He also served as Chief Academic Officer for the Boston University Institute for Dental Research and Education Dubai from 2007–08.

Dr. Kilgore is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and was inducted into the American College of Dentists in 1994. He is an honorary member of the American Academy of Oral Medicine and the American Society of Dental Anesthesiology. He is also a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society.

Dr. Kilgore also has an impressive track record of leadership here at GSDM, on the Medical Campus, and at the University level; he serves on the Applied Strategic Planning Committee; the Pre-Doctoral Admissions Committee; the Dean’s Council on Ethics and Professionalism; the Appointments and Promotions Committee; the Clinic Finance Committee; the Oral Surgery Group Practice; the Advanced Education Committee; and has served as a GSDM representative on the Boston University Faculty Council.

Dr. Kilgore is a proud member of numerous professional organizations including the American Dental Association; the Massachusetts Dental Society; the Massachusetts Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons; the Metropolitan Boston District Dental Society; the American Dental Education Association; the New England Society of Oral Surgery; the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons; and the Massachusetts Chapter of the Committee to Combat Huntington’s Disease.

In 2006, Dr. Kilgore received the Spencer N. Frankl Award for Excellence in Teaching for his outstanding commitment to the mission of the school.  In 2012 he received the American Student Dental Association Faculty Award.
