ADA Annual Session Bring Alums Together For Reception and Honors

Members of the Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine (BUGSDM) community gathered together at an alumni reception during the American Dental Association (ADA) Annual Session. The Annual Session was held from October 16 to 19 in San Antonio, Texas. The reception, hosted by Dean and Mrs. Kathy Hutter, was held at the Hotel Contessa on Saturday, October 18.

"It was wonderful to see alums from all areas of the country in attendance," said Dean Hutter. "This is one of several national receptions I have traveled to since being appointed Dean and the support I have received at each is tremendous. The alumni of BUGSDM are important to our School in so many ways and I value the opportunity to speak with them at these events."

Also during the ADA Annual Session, the American (ACD) and International (ICD) Colleges of Dentists inducted BUGSDM faculty and alumni in separate ceremonies.

ACD inductees included Professor and Chair of the Department of General Dentistry Judith Jones DPH 02; Clinical Assistant Professor of the Department of Health Policy and Health Services Research Jonathan Shenkin; Nathan Birnbaum PROS 74; Aidee Herman ORAL BIO 84, PERIO 86, DMD 90; and Frederick Landy CAS 73, PROS 78.

“It is an honor and a privilege to be selected for fellowship in the College,” said Dr. Jones. "Dr. Shenken and I consider it an incredible responsibility to serve as role models for our students and the community."

ICD inductees included Pamela Baldassarre DMD 82, PERIO 84; Nicholas Kanelos, Jr. DMD 95; and BU Alumni Council member Sven Grail MBA 90, DMD 90.

"Joining fellows of the International College of Dentists, who have made it their objective to advance the art and science of dentistry for the health and welfare of the public internationally, is an honor and I look forward to contributing to this objective through my own service,” said Dr. Grail.

ACD invites dentists to become fellows based on a history of "leadership, excellence, and meritorious achievement in dentistry or public service," according to the College’s website. Fellows, including those chosen from BUGSDM this year are frequently involved in professional organizations, education, and research.

Similarly, the ICD seeks to recognize outstanding service to the field of dentistry and promote the profession for the public’s benefit. As ACD and ICD fellows, members will provide a high standard of leadership to contribute to both their profession and society.

In addition to the ACD and ICD inductions, alum Charles Steffel ENDO 80 was installed as a trustee of the ADA.
