Experimental Grand Rounds Provide Outstanding Results

For the first time at Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine (BUGSDM) two second-year DMD students were selected to present grand rounds based on their experiences during externship rotations.
Jennifer Hill DMD 10 presented first detailing the treatment plan she developed for her 38-year old female patient who’s chief complaint was of sensitivity on her left side. "Successful treatment will change how the patient lives," said Hill. "The patient will be able to eat better because she will no longer feel discomfort."
Hill completed her externship rotation at the general dentistry practice of Dr. Richard J. Kobak in Long Island, New York. Hill’s patient was a dental assistant at the same practice.
The second presenter was Matthew Lupu DMD 10 who completed his externship at the Whittier Street Health Center under the guidance of Dental Director Frank Schiano DMD 06 AEGD 07. "This externship was pivotal in my development as a student," said Lupu.
Lupu’s patient was a radiology technician at the Center and complained of pain in a tooth with a defective crown.
Professor and moderator Dr. Carl McManama commented on Lupu’s case, saying that because of the nature of the patient’s dental issues, this could have easily been a case presented by a fourth-year student. He commended the presenters for taking their cases to a level higher than was expected by a second-year student.
Director of APEX & Extramural Programs Madalyn Mann was also impressed by the caliber of presentations given. "Traditionally we select fourth-year students based on their presentation skills and excellent case studies," said Mann. "For this grand round session we weren’t able to choose based on the same criteria, so we made sure that the student’s case studies had all the important elements. Both Jennifer and Matthew did a great job."
