1. Research Spotlight: New Study Continues to Link Gum Disease to Earlier Mortality Rates
Dr. Brenda Heaton, associate professor of health policy & health services research, along with epidemiology PhD student Julia Bond and colleagues, have found that gum disease is linked to earlier mortality rates, confirming findings first published in a study 25 years ago while drawing on additional data and using more sophisticated analytic methods. 4. Research Spotlight: New Pediatric Disability Educational Program Starts this Academic Year
GSDM was awarded a $1.5 million, five-year grant to develop a program to give predoctoral dental students more experiences caring for pediatric patients with disabilities as well as develop a new complementary training program for general dentists working in community health centers. Dr. Myron Allukian Jr., GSDM clinical assistant professor of health policy & health services research, is widely known in the public health field as a visionary and “The Social Conscience of Dentistry”—a nickname he earned over the course of his 58-year career thanks to his passionate efforts on behalf of the public, the underserved, and vulnerable populations. He reflects on his extensive 50-plus year career after being the first dentist to receive the Massachusetts Public Health Association (MPHA)’s highest honor, the Paul Revere Award for Lifetime Achievement.
