SNDA Holds Black History Month Brunch Celebration
On Sunday, March 4, 2018, the Student National Dental Association (SNDA) chapter of the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) hosted their annual Black History Month event. This year, the group opted to throw a celebratory brunch in the Hiebert Lounge.
Students, faculty, staff, and residents from GSDM spent the morning socializing and enjoying a delicious brunch catered by Panera Bread. Various activities were also available for the attendees, including a Black History Month Trivia game.
The highlight of the event was the keynote presentation by special guest, Dr. Atiya Martin. Dr. Martin is the current CEO and founder of All Aces, Incorporated – a social enterprise company that works to help people, communities, and organizations address difficult topics such as racism, by building personal and community resilience. In her speech, Dr. Martin addressed the topic of racism – its history and the impact it has on everyone’s life, regardless of the color of your skin.
The SNDA chapter extended its gratitude to all attendees and organizers, “thank you to SNDA’s executive board committee for their hard work in putting this event together and to the faculty advisors Dr. Dunham, Dr. Nouh, and Dr. Calabrese for their continuous support. Hope to see you all next year!”
Established in 1972, the SNDA mission continuously remains to promote, support, and encourage a promising academic and social environment for minority dental students. The SNDA chapter at GSDM is a diverse and all-inclusive organization which exists to help the growth of its members academically and professionally; to support and mentor pre-dental students for matriculation and retention into dental schools, especially underrepresented minority students; to educate its members in the social, moral, and ethical obligations of the profession of dentistry; and to improve access to dental care and the delivery of dental services to all people, emphasizing minorities and the underserved through education and community service.
