GSDM Volunteers at the Greater Boston Food Bank

Ten students in the January Preceptorship Program at the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) spent the afternoon volunteering at the Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) on Friday, January 20, 2017. Every preceptorship group spends time at GBFB, as one of their volunteer opportunities during their month at GSDM.

Led by Alicia Berube Petrin, Senior Administrative Assistant in the Office of Business Development, the volunteers worked in the warehouse, inspecting, sorting, and packing food and grocery products. They were all trained at the beginning of their volunteer shift, and were introduced to GBFB – what they do and who they serve. The group then worked together as a team, along with other volunteers, on an assembly line to complete their project. Various tasks assigned to the students included; loading boxes onto conveyor belts, inspecting or sorting products, and checking and labeling boxes.

The ten students in the program are; Harpreet Kaur, Qurat ul Ain, Ritika Nanda, Fenal Shah, Sowjanya Nagamalla, Melika Shahsavar Haghighi, Abhay Dalal, Umama Sayed, Krupali Patel and Sunny Behal.

The GBFB is the largest hunger-relief organization in New England and among the largest food banks in the country. Last year, they distributed 57.7 million pounds of nutritious food to people who struggle to have enough to eat. The GBFB is committed to increasing its food distribution to provide at least one meal a day to every person in need in Eastern Massachusetts while supporting healthy lives and healthy communities.

“I would like to acknowledge the tremendous work our Preceptorship program does both in and out of the classroom. Thank you to all the students who volunteered,” said Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter.
