On Wednesday, November 9, 2016 Kelsey Wilcox DMD 17 delivered the second presentation in the 2016-2017 series of pre-doctoral Grand Rounds presentations to an audience of faculty and students at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM).

Nearly 100 faculty, students, staff, family, and friends were in attendance for Wilcox’s presentation, which was—like all pre-doctoral Grand Rounds presentations—about a treatment plan she devised for an extraordinary patient at her 10-week Externship rotation site located at the Geiger-Gibson Community Health Center in Dorchester, Massachusetts. She was there from May through July 2016.

All pre-doctoral students in the first rotation of GSDM’s Externship program, which took place this summer, presented their treatment plans to faculty in the Department of General Dentistry. Three finalists were chosen, and Wilcox’s presentation was selected to give the Grand Rounds Presentation by Professor in the Department of General Dentistry, Dr. Carl McManama.

Dr. McManama also moderated the Grand Rounds presentation.

The case Wilcox chose for her treatment plan involved a 40 year-old Hispanic female visiting the health center for the first time. The patient had previously been diagnosed with the eating disorder Bulimia, and had limited English language capabilities which required a translator. Her chief complaint was severe sensitivity of her teeth, especially in her upper front teeth, which made eating and drinking quite difficult. Upon an initial oral exam, Wilcox noted serious acid erosion on the lingual surfaces of her teeth, likely due to the vomiting, which was a key contributing factor for the sensitivity. The patient, originally from Colombia, also presented with front canine teeth that had been prepared for crowns over 15 years ago, but had never been delivered to her. This also contributed to her sensitivity.

Wilcox designed multiple treatment plans. First, she recommended a referral to a prosthodontist to manage the acid erosion and missing teeth. However, due to the restrictions of the community health center, Wilcox offered an alternative treatment plan. First, resin modified glass ionomers were placed on the exposed dentinal surfaces of her teeth, but they were lost before her second visit. The remaining phases of the treatment plan called for ceramic crowns on teeth #’s 6 – 11 and a gold crown on tooth #19.

Two more Grand Rounds presentations are scheduled for the 2016-2017 academic year.

“Congratulations to Ms. Wilcox for her successful Externship rotation. I enjoyed her presentation, and commend her on a job well-done,” said Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter.
